5 Famous Authors Who Fought the Odds

5 Authors Who Fought the Odds and Lived their Passion

Life experience and passion are necessary to make any kind of writing pop off the page. The most famous authors today have meshed their life’s work, or their favorite hobbies, with their writing. Clive Cussler, Dan Brown, John Grisham and Robin Cook are a few of the authors that have written to their passion by writing about the subjects with which they are most familiar.

The writing of many authors seems more real because it is infused with their own life experiences. Some writers are inspired by personal tragedy or political beliefs. Some authors are motivated by a dysfunctional childhood to create a unique writing style or imaginary world.

.

Who are Some Famous Authors Who Have Survived Incredible Odds?

Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (1830–1886) was an American poet who lived a mostly introverted and reclusive life. She was considered eccentric. Although she was a prolific poet, fewer than a dozen of her poems were published during her lifetime. Those that were published were altered significantly by publishers. It was not until after her death that the full scope of Dickinson’s work was discovered.

Steven King (1947-present) is, arguably, the top-selling author of horror novels in the United States. Many of his books have been made into successful motion pictures and mini-series over the decades. Mr. King wasn’t always successful. His first major work, Carrie (1973) was rejected over 30 times. His wife retrieved an early draft out of the trash and demanded that he finish it. In the late 1970’s, Carrie was made into King’s first blockbuster movie. Another struggle that the author dealt with was the desertion of his father  when King was 2 years old. The family was left near penniless. Steven King’s most recent complication occurred in 1999. He was walking on a rural highway when he was struck by a distracted driver. He suffered multiple injuries.

J.K Rowling (1965-present) is the United Kingdom’s top selling author. She writes the Harry Potter Series. She has had many challenges in her life, including the following: her mother’s illness and death, a challenging relationship with her father, domestic abuse during her first marriage (finally ending in divorce), a miscarriage, clinical depression, and poverty.

Malala Yousafzai (1997-present) is a Pakistani author, social activist, and youngest-ever Nobel Prize recipient. She was the co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014. She fought for human rights, including equal education for girls, in her home province where the local Taliban had often banned females from attending school. She began blogging anonymously on the BBC Urdu website in 2008 about the militant Taliban’s growing influence. She kept blogging despite death threats. In October, 2012, she was shot three times by a Taliban gunman while traveling on her school bus. Yousafzai’s memoir I Am Malala: The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and was Shot by the Taliban, was published in October, 2013.

Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was an American abolitionist and author. Her novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) was a depiction of life for African Americans under slavery. It energized anti-slavery forces in northern states while provoking widespread anger in the southern states. President Abraham Lincoln is quoted as saying that Harriet Beecher Stowe’s book helped the northern states to win the Civil War. She and her husband were critics of slavery. They supported the Underground Railroad by temporarily housing several fugitive slaves in their home.
.

What Can These Achievers Teach Us?

• Address topics that impassion your imagination and real life. Harriet Beecher Stowe and Malala Yousafzai wrote about extreme social injustice. The works of J.K Rowling and Emily Dickinson are fueled by fantasy born of childhood isolation and personal trauma.

• Write on topics, or in styles, that will change the world. Uncle Tom’s Cabin opened the eyes of America to the horrors of slavery. Emily Dickinson’s groundbreaking style of poetry broadened the spectrum of that genre.

• Illuminate your own world as you envision it; readers may want to become temporary residents. Most people do not live in a world of haunted hotels, psychopathic high-school students and children, or cars that seem to come to life. Yet, Steven King’s horror novels have been bestsellers for over 30 years. Many readers choose to read to escape reality. They are looking for something new.

• Expose the truth at all costs, no matter how ugly it is. Malala Yousafzai fought to expose the repellant truth of legitimized social injustice in her own country despite bullying and an assassination attempt. I believe that the unbelievable perseverance of survivors like the five trendsetters listed above can inspire every author. They are inspirational in how they dealt with personal trauma, their refusal to quit, their groundbreaking techniques and topics, and their passion. May we follow their examples as we write to our own truth and passion!

Now it’s your turn:  How have you meshed your passion with your writing?
.

Traci Lawrence writes about her passion: communication, relationships, the value of individuals and rising above verbal bullying, or trash talk. She lives in the Northern Virginia area of the United States and teaches English, among other subjects. Please find more on her blog, and read her book: Accept No Trash Talk

The Nirmala Effect by Fiza Pathan

Powerful, Passionate Fiction – and Why Fiza Pathan Wrote it…

Nirmala: The Mud Blossom graphically depicts the travails, discrimination, and abuse faced by female children in India from the cradle to the grave. Not an easy read I thought before starting the book. Despite it is a fictional story, it is a clear indictment of India and the inhuman way women and girls are still being treated today. However the story immediately drew my attention and I finished this gripping, fascinating novel in one reading session over the weekend.
.

The Reason for Writing this Story?
I was wondering how Fiza Pathan, a very well educated, and well-off writer, could tell the story of Nirmala the Mud Blossom. After all I knew her for her great non-fiction work CLASSICS: Why We Should Encourage Children To Read Them.  And now a novel that takes place in the slums of Mumbai?
“Rejected and thrown into the dustbin when she was just two days old, the child was rescued and returned to her family by the NGOs. All because this little girl had the misfortune to be born as a female in Mumbai, India …
Nirmala is ill-treated by her mother, always subject to violence at her hands. She is allowed to continue her studies only because she can then coach her younger brothers, as the parents are illiterate. Each beating is accepted with forbearance, as she loves to go to school to get books to read from her library.
Nirmala is forced to stop her studies after the twelfth grade so her parents can save enough money to send the boys to college. She is then married off, but while her married life begins smoothly, it is only the beginning of her next phase of hell. After giving birth to her first child, Nirmala is subjected to harassment, beatings, and forced into doing things contrary to her beliefs and dreams. Her life is shattered.
What will happen to this little mud blossom? Will she fight back or succumb? How can she rid herself of harassment and rise above the stigma she endures?”
.

Fiza Pathan Explains in Her Own Words Why She Had to Write Nirmala: The Mud Blossom

The Nirmala Effect

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000030_00032]

My first novel which has just been released titled ‘Nirmala: The Mud Blossom’ was an accident. I had no intention of writing this story, let alone framing and formatting it into a novella. Yet when I pass the many filthy slums of Mumbai surrounding sky rise buildings and towers…I think to myself that maybe my character Nirmala and I both were accidents. Nirmala, was tossed into a dustbin because she was a girl…I was sent home to my mother’s family because I was a girl. Nirmala and I are two really different people and I can’t understand how I managed to write about her in the first place.

Do I empathize with Nirmala? Maybe…Do I sympathize with Nirmala? Maybe…but one thing is for sure. Nirmala got me thinking about reality, the reality that girls in India are not wanted…Nirmala and I both were not wanted.

Many people…

Success Guide: Interview with Author Jerry Gladstone

.
Today’s interview features author Jerry Gladstone and his very inspiring, upcoming book THE COMMON THREAD of Overcoming Adversity and Living Your Dreams. He shows how successful people are living their dreams and features Academy Award and Grammy Winners, Super Bowl and World Series Champions, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Legends, Best-selling Authors and Billionaires, Olympians, Boxing and UFC World Champions.  Having a vision and a plan, working hard, being dedicated and having a network of people, never giving up, being willing to take on whatever comes your way – this is what distinguishes them all – like a “common thread”.
.

Jerry-Gladstone

Author Jerry Gladstone and his wife Brooke

.

Jerry, thanks for taking the time for this interview.
How would you describe your book to someone who has not yet read it?

As an instant motivator not based on theory but rather on the experiences of those who have overcome challenges and obstacles on their journey to success. The book consists of more than 50 well-known celebrities from the world of sports, music, business and other areas.
.

Is there a message in your book that you want your readers to grasp?
The belief that success is not just reserved for some of us, but can and should be for all of us.

.
What inspired you to start writing?
The time that I spent with so many well-known people was invaluable and I wished that my friends, family and business associates could have the same experience as I did, gaining wisdom and insight from my conversations with them.

.
How did you get the idea for this inspirational book?
My wife Brooke was a great inspiration. We were talking about how some of our friends and people we knew had such great potential, but had a hard time getting out of their own way.
We realized that there was a common way, a common theme, a “Common Thread” of overcoming obstacles and being successful, that ran through the successful people we came in contact with, and we wanted to share with others.

.
Does your book have any underlying theme, message, or moral?
Self-belief can knock down many barriers.

.
Who is your favorite character and why?
I would have to say Sylvester Stallone. I was just 16 years old when Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky hit the theaters. He made me realize that it didn’t matter that I was not the biggest, strongest, smartest or most talented and that with heart, drive and determination, I could accomplish just about anything.

.
Give us an excerpted quote from your favorite review of this book:
Dan Caldwell, founder and president of TapouT. And also a friend of mine started a little T-shirt company out of the back of his car. Years later he sold it for more them $200 million.
He is a big believe that if he can do it then so can anyone!  “If you’re looking to get real strategies to make real productive and positive changes in your life, then ‘The Common Thread’ is a must-read!”
.

THE-COMMON-THREAD book.

If Oprah invited you onto her show to talk about your book, what would the theme of the show be?
Self-belief, overcoming adversity and living your dreams!
.

How much of the book is based on real life (either yours or someone you know)?
100 percent.

.
What would/could a reader or reviewer say about this book that shows they “get” you as an author?
That it was important to share these stories because as a young man I had many challenges and overcame them by using the same best practices offered in the book.
.

Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?
To write when you are inspired and in the right creative mindset. Also, if you do a little at a time, it adds up.

.
Considering a book from the first word you write to the moment you see it on a bookstore shelf, what’s your favorite part of the process?
Re-living the experiences while writing the book.

.

What scene or bit of dialogue in the book are you most proud of, and why?
Rule number one has always been and will be forever:  don’t beat yourself, don’t get in your own way and don’t come up short due to lack of effort, preparation or self-doubt.
.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything about your book?
I will tell you that when it comes out!
.

If your book would be made into a movie, who should play the main character?
Stallone because he represents how an underdog with a million to one shot can succeed.
.

What is the best part of being a writer?
Conveying a message of hope.
.

What’s your least favorite?
The grammar!

.
What is your favorite book?
A very good friend of mine, Ben Macchia, went through a very difficult time after losing his brother Jamie in a motorcycle accident.  Years later I went through a very dark time in my life, Ben sent me this book.  I will always be grateful and without question this book, which was first published in 1968, inspired me to keep moving forward: The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino

9 Tips to Increase ‘Newbie’ Writer Confidence

.
Dancer

By Wanda Octave

All writers believe in their work. Introvert or not, you write because it’s in your DNA. And when you pen your masterpiece, you know that you have developed a brilliant piece of literature that someone would love to read. But… fear keeps it hidden.

Fear of Rejection

  • Fear of what others will think.
  • Fear of writer’s poverty.
  • Fear of taking the leap.
  • Fear of sticking to it for the long haul.
  • Fear of whatever new reality pops into our heads at any given moment.

This has caused many bestselling manuscripts to die in the laptops and shelves of ‘the shy writer’.

Fear Holds Writers Back.
Fear, is the only thing holding good writers back from greatness.  My biggest fear has always been losing my words. As a published author, I am great on paper, but I fear losing my words in a live forum. And though there are many great online marketing sources, you have to put yourself out in the open to market your work. People want to ‘hear’ from the author at some point. Fans want to meet you. And inquiry minds want to know about you. And on many levels.  I have no problem with that. In fact my book is based on life lessons learnt largely from my own life, so my life is literally ‘an open book’. I am shockingly candid at times and ‘tell it like it is’ without fear of judgment. In ‘real’ life, I also love meeting people and talking about my book, about life and about their experiences. But when Cameras, microphones, and a sea of faces stare up at me, I’m suddenly afraid of losing my words.
As a newbie this is normal, but I’ve heard that it happens to established authors too. This is only my first book so my trip to OZ has been slow and rocky, I am becoming more confident as the months roll on. By this time next year, I’ll have a different article for you. In the meantime here’s what I’ve learnt and what has worked well for me:

.
1. Send Interview Questions Before Hand.
Include a list of sample interview questions in your media kit so that you know what to expect and are comfortable with your answers. I used to  be worried about repetition but each interviewer somehow has a different flare or twist and though the answers are the same, they are different every time. Also sometimes the interview may move in a particular direction and you get to cover a lot more than your core questions.

.
2. Have a Conversation Instead of an Interview.
It is a good idea to research your interviewer so that the interview can have more of a friendly flow. Easing your book into a ‘conversation’, makes it relate-able and relevant. If time permits, it is also beneficial to have a casual chat with the interviewer, or producer with the cameras rolling. Many times you reveal a lot more interesting information then, than during the actual interview.

.
3. You Will Need to Think on Your Feet.
When I sit with my thoughts, the words don’t just flow, they gush! It’s not the same when you’re the center of attention in front of a live audience. So I usually come up with a plan of a beginning, middle and end, and fill in with personal experiences in between. I understand that it is the experiences of life that connect us and I want to connect with the sea of faces in front of me. If I only have three things to remember, ‘beginning, middle and end’ then it is less difficult to ‘lose’ my words.

.
4. Hide Behind Radio.
Doing Radio is like having a one on one. At first, the prospect of hundreds of people listening to me made me started having a conversation with the announcer and literally forgot that there were hundreds or thousands of people listening.

.
5. Do A LOT of Book Signings
I absolutely love book signings. It is a great way to meet people. A perfect sales medium and an excellent way to build your confidence as a writer. I do book signings at books stores, malls, events, street fares, you name it!  And I have met a wide spectrum of people, many of whom have helped me grow my business.

.
6. Everyone Will Not Love You.
As it is in life you will get your share of critics and you will need to develop a tough skin. People will be judgmental and condescending, but if you believe in your message/story, it will be enough. Always remember why you decided to become a writer and remind yourself too of the many lives that you have changed through your work.

.
7. Go to Conferences.
If you want to learn to be more effective in public, it is a good idea to go to conferences that you would like to speak at in the future. Recognize what each speaker brings to the table. Learn different presentation styles. See what you can offer that can add value to a future conference. Then write an awesome proposal and start pitching for next year. You may be a newbie this year, but hopefully a pro by next year.

.
8. Make Yourself Interesting.
Connect. Connect. Connect! Keep it real. I believe that we connect with each other through our experiences. And we all have the same experiences, our circumstances are just different. Tell your story. You will be surprised how many people can relate. The most popular feedback that I get, is that the stories in my book are relevant. When a reader feels that you understand them, they become a fan.

.
9. Hang Around.
I like to chat with staff at the radio and TV stations and talk to the audience after a conference or event that I attend or speak at. The bulk of my book sales come from book signings and ‘back of the room’ sales. Because my book is relatively new and I am not an established writer, I have to make a personal connection with potential readers. And being available for a chat gives me an opportunity to do one-on-one marketing, have in-depth personal conversations or sometimes a mini coaching session. I have learned that people are more likely to purchase your book when they connect with you.

.
Finally, there is also a whole world of online marketing out there which I am only now starting to explore. I have to learn to put myself ‘out there’ both in the physical and virtual world. It’s nice to be at home, while out (in cyberspace) at the same time. I’m sure it’s not as easy as hiding behind my laptop though. I’ll have to gather all my self-confidence tools and start over.

Thriller set in International Oil Markets: To Steal a Sea

.

To-Steal-a-Sea
.

About the Author Simon D. Reagan:

Simon D. Reagan lives in London and has lectured and presented on financial crime, money laundering, and international finance for more years than he’d care to say. He holds a doctorate in financial innovation in the global shipping sector. He’s fascinated by world politics and conspiracies, both real and imagined, and loves the beaches of Trinidad during the later cooler days of summer. Quite a paradox since he prefers rain and wind-swept umbrellas, and thunderstorms across seascapes.
.

To Steal a Sea in Print and e-Book:

Russian oligarch Petr Damyanovitch had amassed his fortune through ruthlessness and charisma. His war record had been exemplary: as one of the most talented snipers in the Russian Army he had survived the blood-soaked killing fields of Stalingrad, and been present at the fall of Berlin.
.

But after the collapse of the USSR his obsession became to restore his nation’s place in the world, using the untamed destructiveness of the international bond markets to wreak havoc upon those he blames for its demise. New-found allies on Wall Street and in a pragmatic White House would collaborate in his conspiracy, by supreme irony assisted by an Islamic fundamentalist with a vendetta against a modern secular world.
.

Only three men stand in the way, with exceptional talents in law and finance but character flaws in equal measure. This would be a battle which would engulf many in its path, with the oil riches of a sea and the survival of nations as prizes. As panic floods the markets, a figure from the past emerges who holds the balance of power in his hands, seeking justice for a crime hidden from the world for a lifetime.
.

The theme of closeness between friends, between lovers, and between father and daughter, pervades the book, as a terrifying conspiracy tears its way through the international oil markets. But it is the haunting of a war criminal, and the unfathomable self-guilt of a survivor, which drive forces which would clash across countries and continents in a remorseless quest for revenge and retribution, and an insatiable need for spiritual salvation.

Stephen King Book Signing in Sarasota Florida

.
Read tips for your own book signing, that might not draw such a crowd, but it will show your book to many more readers, and it is a part of your author platform, which helps to cement your author brand.

.

.

Folks were lining up around the blog… What a sight!  I was curious and asked one of those in line if there is free ice cream from the new opened parlor.  But no!  She explained me that there is a book
signing.  Book Signing? Really? Yes, she said, in BookStore 1 is an author signing his books.  Yes, and what’s his name? Stephen King she answered. Well, no wonder that folks are lining up!

Stephen King Book Signing in Sarasota Florida

As I had already a small camera in hand, I asked several folks to model for me and took also lots of
photographs from parts of the line-up (sorry, had no wide angle lens with me to capture how the line went around the whole block).

Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine in 1947. He made his first professional short story sale in 1967 to Startling Mystery Stories. In the fall of 1973, he began teaching high school English classes at Hampden Academy, the public high school in Hampden, Maine.  I would assume to make ends meet…

If it hadn’t been for Stephen King’s wife, Tabitha, the iconic image of a young girl in a prom dress
covered in pig’s blood would not exist. King received 30 rejections for his story of a tormented girl
with telekinetic powers, and then he threw it in the trash. Tabitha fished it out. She sent his story
around again and, eventually, Carrie was published. The novel became a classic in the horror
genre and has enjoyed film and TV adaptations as well.

Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on novels. In the spring of 1973, Doubleday & Co., accepted the novel Carrie for publication, which allowed him the means to leave teaching and write full-time. He has since published over 50 books and has become one of the world’s most successful writers.
.

Word for Your Week:
“Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is hard work.” –Stephen King

And by the way: There is a publishing seminar in Sarasota, FL, this coming Saturday, March 22.
Sign-up for the Early-Bird-Offer, and learn how to become a successful writer – maybe one day people are lining up for your book signings too.  It all takes a lot of time, often years, patience and dedication. We will show you at this seminar how to redeem and get short stories from your books’ manuscript and from your research, to get your name out as a writer. Remember: Stephen King started out with short stories!

Tips for Your Own Book Signing
Start with your local bookstores, some will agree to a book signing with a local author. However, just because you set up an event, doesn’t mean people will come! You have to announce it to as many people as possible. In the weeks leading up to the book signing, promote it often on all your Social Media sites, on Craigslist, print some flyers and post it at libraries, on Community Boards, coffee shops etc. Sent out a press release to various local media outlets, and maybe offer them a free digital version of your book.

Don’t forget to mention that you will have a drawing (maybe for a Kindle, Kobo or Nook and also that you will have “refreshments” (ice water to juice, coffee, or cookies, or even wine and cheese). It all depends on the venue, in a chain book stores that includes a coffees hop you may think about a gift card for a large coffee to hand out to people who bought your book.
Bring your book markings or cards, a fish bowl to collect addresses for the drawing, lots of pens, and ice water for yourself. And have someone to be present at your table and help you. See more tips at our blog post: “Top 18 Book Launch Tips” where you also get a time schedule.
,
In her article “How to Have A Successful Book Signing” MaryJanice Davidson said: “First, let’s define “successful”. A successful book signing is when you show up, your books are there, you have a place to sit, and you sell just one book.”  Well, hopefully more than one I would say.
.
Author Michel Sauret: “Not every person that comes up to you during the signing will buy the book. Don’t be desperate and try to force a sale to everyone you talk to, but definitely show your enthusiasm and confidence in your own work.”

Valerie Peterson wrote: “signing books—can be an important part of your book marketing campaign. While online bookselling is booming, of course, many people do enjoy seeing authors live and in person, and it gives writers an opportunity to meet their readers—as well as to sell some books!”

15 Question to Ask Yourself Before Writing

.

13742555908f0b2
.

To every new client I send out a questionnaire about their book(s), their social media presence, book distribution etc., but also about their plans concerning the book. From their answers I can see how much (or few) they thought about their readership, their competition and the purpose of their writing.  Many, if not most writers sit down and start their book, writing and writing and not thinking who will read their book, nor how they will publish and most important: how will they market their work.
.

Questions for You
Here are some questions you should answer honestly. It will give you an idea how viable your book idea is. Every business has to start with a plan. If you want to sell your book after writing it, answers to these questions could partially substitute a “business plan”. And if you want to find a publisher or a literary agent  – answering these questions before your first meeting is even more important. Why should someone think about publishing your book when you, the writer, didn’t even think about the future of this book and who will be the readers?

  1. Is there a need for your book? Does it fill a void?
  2. Why do you find your book idea interesting?
  3. Why would someone buy your book? What’s their benefit?
  4. Will your book always be interesting in the future?
  5. How big is your market and what is the demographic of your readers?
  6. Who will buy and read your book? How many people?
  7. Could your book idea be turned into series?
  8. Would your book have a regional or international audience?
  9. Who is your competition and how well did their books sell?
  10. Where and exactly how will you market your book?
  11. How easy can you reach your readership and how large will it be?
  12. How many (real) friends / followers do you have on Social Media?
  13. Do you have an opt-in email list on your website/blog or already an email newsletter?
  14. Could your book be sold in bulk to a company/organization to promote another product or service?
  15. In what magazines or newspapers articles, TV shows, radio shows, websites and newsletters can you market your book?
    .

Still Excited About Your Book Idea?
After you answered all these questions, do you still have the burning desire to write your book? Or did some of the questions make you uneasy? If you ever want to pitch a book idea to a publisher or an agent, you will be asked the same or similar questions. So be prepared!  Use your answers to prepare your “Elevator Pitch“.  Editor Mike Zimmerman said in an article at Success.com: “Artists starve not because they aren’t talented – but because they often have no idea how to make money.”

How Far Would You Go in the Name of Research?

.
Research

.

Margaret K Johnson asks:  How far would you go in the name of research?
We have all heard about method actors who go to extreme lengths to get into character for their roles. These actors feel they need to really experience the lives of their characters.  For example, to play the character of Christy Brown in My Left Foot about a disabled man, Daniel Day-Lewis refused to leave his wheelchair for the whole duration of the filming. Robert de Niro became a taxi driver for his role in Taxi Driver, and learnt to box for Raging Bull. It’s also very common for actors to gain or lose weight for their roles – Christian Bale weighed only 122 pounds for his role in The Machinist, and Ann Hathaway lost 25 pounds and cut off all her hair for her role in Les Miserables.
.
What about Writers?
These days we almost take such behavior by actors for granted.  But what about writers?  Do we need to deliberately set out to experience situations for the sake of our writing?  Surely not. After all, we are writers – we should have enough imagination without doing that, right?
.
Well, actually, yes and no.  I think it depends on what you’re writing about.  Authors of detective stories are not going to kill people to find out what it feels like to be a murderer.  At least, I hope not!  But they are likely to draw on their experience of grief when writing about the victims of such crimes.
.
When I was writing my novel The Dare Club, which is about a group of newly-separated people setting each other challenges in order to forget about their problems, I found that there were some things I could easily imagine – for example gate-crashing a total stranger’s 40th birthday party.  But when one of my characters wanted to perform stand-up comedy, I knew I would have to have a go at it myself. How else would I find out how to come up with material, to prepare for a performance, or to deal with the sheer, blinding terror of actually performing?
.
Stand-Up Comedy Class fto Research
So, with everyone telling me how brave I was, I duly booked myself on a weekend stand-up comedy course in London.  And then, two months later, I returned to perform a 3-minute stand-up comedy routine in a Greenwich comedy club.  Here’s a link to a clip of me performing, in case you don’t believe me!  It was a completely amazing – if terrifying – experience, and it really gave me an insight that I was able to use in my writing:
.
Now I’ve got a taste for challenging myself, in the future I might even choose to write novels that involve me doing exciting research. Though maybe not quite in the way I stated at the end of my stand-up comedy performance.
People say to me – “If you wrote murder fiction, would you actually kill someone to find out what it feels like?” I say, of course not.  But I might put an orgy in my next book…
.

Damaging Self-Judgment of Writers?

.

DownSpiral

.

Candace Habte: “A few weeks ago when I first heard about the Insecure Writers Support Group, my first thought was this is a cool idea.  As humans, we have all felt insecure about something. And writers, despite what we may like to think, are certainly human.  My second emotion was frustration, even resentment.  I thought, great, all we need is more stereotypes.  I imagined cyber minions turning the twitter hashtag #ISWG into #whinywriters or #getarealjobthen.”
.

I Soon Realized the Reason for my Thought Pattern
“I was projecting how I sometimes perceive that I am viewed. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve dealt with a lot of people (even family and friends) that were downright rude when it comes to my life as a writer.
It’s been said that you are not a writer until you get your first rejection. My first rejection came in the 10th grade (my high school literary journal – I’m over it, really) so I guess I am a veteran. Well I would say that when you get your first weird stare, question about your life (you know the, “Okay, but what do you really do?”) it ranks right up there with rejection. I have had my share of both rejection and also judgment. But to be honest, the latter bothered me the most.”
.

Damaging Self-Judgment
“But I’m beginning to realize how much more damaging self-judgment can be.  So let me explain: A few years ago I took my first yoga class. My teacher was the best, the class bonded, I did poses I didn’t think I could do, and I felt strong in body and spirit. I pretty much reaped all the benefits of yoga. It was
amazing.
Did I mention everyone in my class was fat? No, I’m not being mean. Everyone, including myself at the
time, was overweight or obese because the class was targeted for that demographic. Of course, no one
was being turned away for being smaller, but the class name (it had the word “belly” in it, if I recall
correctly) and description were definitely geared towards those of us who needed to lose some weight. It wasn’t about losing the weight in the class, though despite what some people think about yoga (you can lose weight with certain types of yoga) but that’s not the point…”

“So imagine my insecurity, having never before taken a yoga class, barely flexible, and a little “extra to
love”.  Yes, the class was targeted towards bigger people, but the studio was still filled with mostly slim
yogis. Okay, I wasn’t going to add this part but guess what? I ended up being one of the smaller people
there.  Ironically, this fact made me feel more insecure. Because now I was the only “sort-of-fat” girl in a “fat girl (and guy)” class sharing stories of what it’s like to be fat. I could feel myself getting the roll of the eyes. Was this actually happening? Probably not. My instructor and fellow students were some of the nicest, most encouraging, genuine and absolutely hilarious folks I have ever met.”
.

Our Recording
“So what does all of this have to do with writing, or better yet, being an insecure writer? Well besides my pre-class insecurities that were pretty much assuaged before the end of the first class, I learned a really important concept from my instructor: the recording. We all have one.
This may sound insensitive, but if you have ever been called stupid, fat, skinny, lazy, worthless, etc. it
doesn’t matter. Okay, it matters but not as much as we make it. For the record, I’m not talking about
being bullied or harassed. Meaning someone or some group is excessively trying to make you feel like
crap. That’s always wrong. And that’s an entirely different topic. But no one has gone through life without someone putting them down in some way, intentionally or not.”
.

“The reason? It doesn’t matter, because it is our recording that keeps it alive. Our recording – if you haven’t guessed – is the mental record that we repeat to ourselves, yearly, monthly, weekly, or even daily. This is why we can hold on to stuff from high school (or grade school) even after many years have passed. We hold on to words said by people who we have no contact with anymore. We hold on to words said by people who aren’t even alive anymore.”

.
How We Keep Our Recording Alive
“We keep pressing “play”, over and over and over again: “Your writing is mediocre”, “You’ll never make it as … (fill in the blank), “You can write as a hobby, but not as a profession”, “Writing fiction is pointless”, “Blogging is stupid” etcetera etcetera.
No doubt, certain put-downs hurt more than others, and these are the ones that stick. Because the ones
that stick have made a home right next to our existing insecurities. Basically, we’re working off a blank
tape and adding our own damaging self-judgement as time moves forward.

Which is exactly what I was doing when I heard about the Insecure Writers Support Group: “Support
group? No way, I don’t need that. I don’t want to whine and hear other writers do the same.” People in other professions talk to their co-workers, complain about their boss, gripe to anyone in earshot and then they get back to work. Writers need that too. Then we can get back to our work of writing, mental recordings be damned.”
.

About the Author:

Treasure of Saint-Lazare, a Novel About Paris

,
Treasure-of-Saint-LazareSharon Fawley for Readers’ Favorite:

Treasure of Saint-Lazare“, by John Pearce, is a mystery about events far distant in time and
space that profoundly affect the peaceful life of a wealthy American businessman living in Paris.”

“… Pearce weaves richly textured descriptions of life in Paris through an intricate plot with believable, well-drawn characters.”

“Overall, this is a satisfying mystery, a surprising love story, and an up close look into the dark days of Europe as WWII drew to a close.”

Reviewer:
“One thing I loved about this book is that the author beautifully describes Paris in a very romantic way, and its description appears seamless within the story.”

About the Novel:
An older lover brings a cryptic letter to Paris, pulling Eddie Grant reluctantly into a treacherous web of intrigue and death — but giving him a slim chance to find the terrorists who murdered his family seven years before.
.
It launches him on a dangerous quest through Paris and the Loire Valley for the most valuable piece of Nazi loot that remains missing, a famous Raphael self-portrait from the early 16th century, along with the crates of Nazi bullion that accompanied it — all intended to finance the Fourth Reich.

Jen Wetzmuller, daughter of his father”s World War II colleague in Army Intelligence, arrives in Paris, bearing a letter she found after her father was run down by a car on the streets of Sarasota. Its clues take Eddie from his Paris home to Florida, where he works to solve the mystery, barely escaping with his life. Then it”s back home to burrow into the darkest reaches of the German occupation in search of the treasure. Along the way he and Jen restart the brief, fiercely passionate affair that he abandoned, to his regret, 20 years before Sarasota.  Most of all, Treasure of Saint-Lazare is a novel about Paris.

John Pearce:
Treasure of Saint-Lazare is based on fact, the theft in 1939 of the priceless Raphael painting “Portrait of a Young Man,” which disappeared in 1945.  Even though it covers much ground — from my current home of Sarasota, FL, to my part-time home of Paris, to Poland during the war, it is at heart a novel of Paris.”

About the Author
John Pearce is a part-time Parisian, but lives quite happily most of the the year in Sarasota, Florida.  He worked as a journalist in Washington and Europe, where he covered economics for the International Herald Tribune and edited a business magazine. After a business career in Sarasota, he spends his days working on his future books – a sequel he expects to publish later in 2014 and a prequel after that. For several months each year, he and his wife Jan live in Paris, walking its streets, and chase down interesting settings for future books and his blog, JohnPearceAuthor.com. They lived earlier in Frankfurt, Germany, which gave him valuable insights for several of the scenes in his sequel, whose working title is Last Stop: Paris.
