About the author:
A chocolate bar was the first prize in an essay writing contest that I won when I was in grade 4 back in Europe. This was 50 years ago and I barely remember the exact topic, but it had something to do with fire fighters as I received the prize from a huge guy in full fire fighter regalia.
Later I wrote about commercial aviation, pilot training and traveling the USA, using small airplanes. When the German flight magazine I wrote for, was purchased by a major publishing house and my colleagues salaries and mine were cut in half, I decided to take the punch and publish my own flight magazine “USA by Air” and I become their competitor in the aviation magazine world.
It was a great success and I loved it, even though it was sometimes stressful as I wrote most articles (in German), shoot nearly all photographs, did most of the layout and even ad sales and office work. But I learned a lot in this role as a magazine publisher-editor-art-director-marketing-manager and went also into book self-publishing for my own books that covered everything from aviation to pilot training and travel.
Years later I studied for two years e-publishing and marketing, more for my own fun, as the course offered also an attractive mixture of professional photography, writing for the web and marketing, XHTML/CSS, web and graphic design including Photoshop.

Doris,
I have to say I LOVE this site. I just read your ‘About’, and I had to read it over again. I am currently writing an arson investigation procedural firefighting novel, my husband is in the Royal Canadian Air Force, as an aerospace engineer (obsessed with planes). I am on a journey to figure out social media marketing, and I live in Ottawa. Funny how things come together. It’s like someone gave us a writing exercise with the key words: Firefighter, plane, social media marketing, and Ottawa. We each came up with a different story!
Thank you so much for the work you put into this. It’s truly helpful. Please consider my guest post submission. You can categorize it under “Newbie”.
In medias res,

Doris,
I am delighted to have discovered your blog. You are doing a worthy service helping aspiring authors navigate the sometimes murky waters of self-publishing. You offer a tremendous, thorough and broad range of information in the field. With traditional publishers easing their way into capitalizing on the self-publishing boom, we have to be more vigilant than ever.
It’s my pleasure to share your blog with my subscribers, clients and social media friends.

In your very helpful March 11th post about free ways to promote one’s book, you stated that authors could “submit your book’s jpeg photo, description and author information” to this blog and get free promotion. I couldn’t find any link for that purpose. Is this service still available?

Wow, just like me and Dorrance… for the price I paid for Vanity printing I get ZERO marketing. So I will be publishing the 2nd and 3rd book in my series by myself. I am trying to learn the ropes to e-publishing and self promoting along with my writing time. Also have to squeeze all of that into my FF duties at my Fire Department.. Glad I found you!

Send everything in an Open email. Just copy and paste your text and for images please send only the link to it.

Hi Doris,
With just having had my book, “A Killer of a Camp” published, I was thinking of doing an adventurous promotion on my website, http://www.akillerofacamp.com, where the first chapter can be read out to visitors. Though with the novel containing cursing, violence and more, which would only be suitable for ages 18+, do you know of any laws that need carried out??? As the only thing that’s crossed my mind is for to have a terms and conditions page appear, where the listener must fill in, agreeing to the terms and conditions and mostly that they’re over the age of 18 before they can listen to the first chapter being read out to them.
I look forward to hearing from you, and please don’t hesitate to email me your address to forward you a copy of the novel.
Kind regards
David

I wonder if there are seminars in Canada ? California is a little too far and expensive for me. Would love to attend seminars. I’m in the SouthShore of Quebec, about 20km south of Montreal.
