How Far Would You Go in the Name of Research?

.
Research

.

Margaret K Johnson asks:  How far would you go in the name of research?
We have all heard about method actors who go to extreme lengths to get into character for their roles. These actors feel they need to really experience the lives of their characters.  For example, to play the character of Christy Brown in My Left Foot about a disabled man, Daniel Day-Lewis refused to leave his wheelchair for the whole duration of the filming. Robert de Niro became a taxi driver for his role in Taxi Driver, and learnt to box for Raging Bull. It’s also very common for actors to gain or lose weight for their roles – Christian Bale weighed only 122 pounds for his role in The Machinist, and Ann Hathaway lost 25 pounds and cut off all her hair for her role in Les Miserables.
.
What about Writers?
These days we almost take such behavior by actors for granted.  But what about writers?  Do we need to deliberately set out to experience situations for the sake of our writing?  Surely not. After all, we are writers – we should have enough imagination without doing that, right?
.
Well, actually, yes and no.  I think it depends on what you’re writing about.  Authors of detective stories are not going to kill people to find out what it feels like to be a murderer.  At least, I hope not!  But they are likely to draw on their experience of grief when writing about the victims of such crimes.
.
When I was writing my novel The Dare Club, which is about a group of newly-separated people setting each other challenges in order to forget about their problems, I found that there were some things I could easily imagine – for example gate-crashing a total stranger’s 40th birthday party.  But when one of my characters wanted to perform stand-up comedy, I knew I would have to have a go at it myself. How else would I find out how to come up with material, to prepare for a performance, or to deal with the sheer, blinding terror of actually performing?
.
Stand-Up Comedy Class fto Research
So, with everyone telling me how brave I was, I duly booked myself on a weekend stand-up comedy course in London.  And then, two months later, I returned to perform a 3-minute stand-up comedy routine in a Greenwich comedy club.  Here’s a link to a clip of me performing, in case you don’t believe me!  It was a completely amazing – if terrifying – experience, and it really gave me an insight that I was able to use in my writing:
.
Now I’ve got a taste for challenging myself, in the future I might even choose to write novels that involve me doing exciting research. Though maybe not quite in the way I stated at the end of my stand-up comedy performance.
People say to me – “If you wrote murder fiction, would you actually kill someone to find out what it feels like?” I say, of course not.  But I might put an orgy in my next book…
.

The 15 World Top Websites in Alexa Ranking

.

Alexa Ranking

.

Alexa.com, the web information and measure company, let you know the traffic relation between your website / blog and the rest of the almost one billion sites worldwide. At www.Alexa.om you can search by country, by category and global. As lower your ranking is as better. Check out your own site: Just go to Alexa.com and type in your blog or website.
.

Why is the Alexa Ranking so Relevant?
Website ranking, as a concept, is stressed as an important component of search engines, particularly by Google themselves. Sites with higher Alexa Ranks become more likely to attract potential advertisers and/or marketing offers. And if you are looking for promotion of your books, compare the companies’ Alexa Ranking, among other variables, before you make a decision!
.

The Examiner.com Wrote:
“The first thing you need to know about Alexa, that like a golf score, a lower number is better. What Alexa does is rank your website based on traffic.  Data collected provides a 3-month view of how many people visited your site, how long they stayed, how many pages were read and search queries used to find your site.  Most sites never go under 1 million, simply because they don’t rank well on search engines, others get really good scores (less than 100,000) because they are viewed so often.
.
Tips to increase your Alexa Ranking:

  • The better the content of your blog or website, the stronger the readership. It would also attract good traffic and your Alexa ratings would soar. If you are a novice blogger, you need to regularly post at least a blog/day to keep your blog alive and breathing. Promote your blog on social networking sites and it will no longer clog.
  • A great way to increase the Alexa rank, is to write guest posts. The numbers of your Alexa rank will scale to a much higher level if you build the back links and your own readership will soar to great heights.

How to Become a Successful Writer? WRITE !

.
Keyboard-VisaCard.

Even the shyest author, who would never speak at writer conferences or to a group of book lovers at a library, can write his or her way to success. I am not talking about your next book, which is certainly important, as your readers want to get more books from you, once they discovered you as an author.
.

So, what else can you write to become successful?

  • write short stories that you can sell (or give away) on Amazon
  • write articles for newspapers and magazines
  • write regularly blog articles
  • write guest blog
    .

OMG, I hear you saying, the day has not enough hours… to do all this…
.
Write short stories
In a former blog post  I explained “why you should split your book apart and sell each piece separately” and “divide it in chapters which you can sell to magazines or to web publishers”. To use a chapter or two for a short story means no work at all, but you certainly could change or shorten it a bit. Offer these short stories for download on your website – this way you get the email of your readers. Install an opt-in email form and offer your readers at the same time to sign up in order to get regular info about free stories and new book releases.
.
Very important: Don’t just give the story away. Write a short bio or add an about.me link, including your website, info about all your books and their sales link at the end of your short story. This way, readers meet the author (you) and get to know your books and might one order right away with the help of the link they find in the short story.
Upload short stories to Wattpad, Red Room, Goodreads or Booksie.

Why short stories?  With all the distractions from other, flashier forms of entertainment it can be a struggle to set aside an hour or two and a find a quiet spot to read a book. Short stories can be read in 20 minutes- while enjoying lunch break, riding the bus or standing in a queue.
,

Markets for Short Stories:  Authors who are aiming to supplement their income have to find markets at magazines, on Duetrope.com or offer their books to Amazon for inclusion into “Kindle Shorts”. Stories between 2,000 and 5,000 words are most market-able, however there is demand for all lengths. Duetrope is an award-winning, free writers’ resource listing over 4150 current Fiction and Poetry publications, updated almost daily.
.

Write articles for newspapers and magazines
Be smart, and sell your magazine articles over and over again. As long as the markets don’t overlap, you can sell exactly the same article as many times as you like and, in this globally connected marketplace, it is easier than you think. However, you can only sell first rights, either print or electronic, once for the same piece. After that, unless you change the article significantly, you must offer it as a reprint for a lower fee.

If you change the article, you can sell it again for first rights. For example, you can turn a 600 word piece about traveling with a dog (a chapter of your memoir book) for a dog lovers magazine, into a similar length article for a regional newspaper and then a dog food website (e-rights). Then tweak it into an 900 word article for a national newspaper. Make make some minor changes and shorten the piece a bit for a travel or and airline magazine. Each time, you are able to sell it for first rights. Continue to sell it, however look also out for new markets in other English language media overseas.
.
Steven Raichlen’s brilliant coup: He wrote an article for Huffington Post Foodie Paradise: 10 Great Places to Eat in Martha’s Vineyard. In a salute to some of Steven Raichlen’s favorite local bars, restaurants, coffee shops, lobster shacks, and ice cream parlors on Martha’s Vineyard, he had his characters visit the same places which he usually patronizes with his wife. He writes in this article: “I hope you’ll discover them by reading “Island Apart”. And then he gives even a link to his book on Amazon, explaining that it is now available in paperback.

Writing this article, Steven Raichlen was able to mention his book to a million readership FOR FREE, as the famous Huffington Post is a blog-empire, newspaper and online news aggregator, is also ranked the most powerful blog in the world by “The Observer” and is number 42 in “The Guardian‘s” Top 100 Media List.

.
Why Blogging is #1 in Gaining Readers
“Blogging is not only fun and a way to interact with your readers, but it is an important part of your social media presence”, says Edmund S. Lee, a famous content marketing specialist: “Did you know that blogging is part of a complete social media strategy? The number one reason you need to include blogging as part of your marketing strategy is because it will gain you more readers and also more customers.”  He explains further: “There are a number of reasons why blogging brings an increase in website traffic and in customers. The first has to do with the art of search engine optimization, aka SEO, which means a higher ranking on Google”.

I might add: especially if you post your blog headlines regularly on Google+. And your blog gives your readers a reason to come back to your website on a regular basis. They will naturally see you as someone who provides value to their lives, which builds trust between you and your readers.

.
Write guest blogs
To get the most of your guest blogging, look for a blog with an audience that’s similar to yours, but preferably with a huge readership. This way you can greatly increase the number of your visitors. A smart move is also to look for book reviewer blogs, as they are mainly read by book lovers. At the same time you make friends with the reviewer and chances are very high to get your own book reviewed. Check out a former post about guest blogging etiquette.
.

It’s called content marketing …
Writing articles should become your standard operation procedure, no matter if blogs, articles for print or online – free or for a fee. Write and sell articles to newspapers, magazines and online. Reselling your work makes good business and time management sense, it cements your brand and gets your name and your books titles to a large audience. And even if you give away your articles (in exchange for email addresses of your readers) you gain something very important: Contact to your readers (and maybe reviewers) and future customers.

Guest Blogging Etiquette

Guest blogging brings lots of benefits, from building authority to generating back-links to your book sales site and attracting new readers on your own blog.  However, before you start offering guest blogs, your own blog should be around at least  for a year, with a minimum of between one and  two-hundred entries.

Make sure your own blog or website is ready for the new readers that you will get by guest blogging. You need to ensure that your blog/website has the following traits: marvelous design, quality writing, share buttons and a subscription field – in short: you blog should show professionalism.

Where and how to search for guest blogger opportunities.
To get the most of your guest blogging, look for a blog with an audience that’s similar to yours. Guest posting on a blog with a similar subject as you can greatly increase the number of your visitors.

.

  • Check out comments from others on your blog
  • Study your favorite blogs’ blogrolls
  • Google for terms such as “guest post” or “guest bloggers”

Read as many posts on these blogs to become familiar with the blog’s writing style and to understand the most sought after topics. Subscribe to their newsletter, follow them on Twitter, visit their Facebook or Google+ page.  Leave your comments where you see it appropriate, however, useful and valuable comments.  Doing this will present yourself as an active blog reader competent in the subject the blog deals with.  You will be recognizable by the blog’s owner and other readers. This increases the chance to have your guest post accepted by the blogger and published.

Strictly follow the instructions the host blogger has provided in his invitation. Look for signals of interest in guest bloggers before making your offer. Has the blogger made any indication they are open to guest blogging? Always do your homework before you start offering a guest blog.

.
Write Your Guest Post
Congratulations, you are invited to write a guest post! Now, don’t wait a months or so to send it in. You are expected to have your article submitted within the next 2-3 days. On the other hand, give the blog owner at least a week or two time to post your guest blog. They might have lined up other posts before yours came in, or have to squezze in something unexpected. It happened to me the other day that an impatient guest blogger posted the article (which she had emailed me 5 days earlier) on her own blog, without ever contacting me, because she found it too long until her guest blog appeared on my site. Will I ever offer her a guest blog again? Go figure!

.
Make sure the content matches the audience and the goals of the host blog.
When you have a good feel for the style and posts on the blog, write a guest post specifically for that blog. Never copy and paste one of your old blog posts or a guest post that you have already posted on another blog. Write the best copy ever, refine, spell-check, fact-check and produce a high-quality guest blog, your host will remember and invite you for future writings. This way you will gather more readers who click on your link and visit your own blog.

Your guest post must be of interest to the blog’s target audience, and most importantly, it must be a specific topic the blogger hasn’t written about before. Your post should add value to the host’s blog and be written for the host blog’s audience. Photos and links for your article add additional an additional bonus to your guest blog.

Include a link or two to a post on your own blog or website. The anchor text of the links should have a search engine friendly key word. Never write: click here. Always use specific key words from your own articles.

If your blog post gets approved on one of the top blogs in your niche, your content was intriguing and you get traffic over to your blog. When this happens, make sure your blog is ready to make the most of this new found traffic.
.
