Ominous: Borders: Coffee

.

Ominous: Borders: Coffee

V400370332_SX200_Set in PARIS, this thriller surges ominously through the psyche of modern Europe. Conflict is rife; danger is everywhere. You will be tempted to trawl through Paris, to drink in the bars, or smoke on dark street corners. Be warned… watch your back… Inspector Vasseur has his favorite table on a battered sidewalk.

Alone he sits on hot summer nights, allowing his instincts to grapple with the mysterious case of innocent deaths along the River Seine. In other parts of the city, the Stalker trails her female targets, hell-bent on seduction; the Baker clings to his French traditions despite the temptations of the world around him; two beautiful women set up a coffee society – one leaves the prison of her insular creativity and the other relishes life in all its forms.

They bring out the very evil in some, and the pursuit of romance in others. In this tightly plotted novel, borders are stormed, emotional, sexual, and psychotic; and borders weave danger around lovers of coffee, the creative, and the finest of foods. Discover why author Peter Standish Evans holds a deserved and special place among-st the new breed of thriller writers. Ominous: Borders: Coffee will be a dog-eared and red wine stained addition to your book collection.

.

About the Author:

Peter Standish Evans was born in England; son of a Welsh father and Scottish mother with a penchant for moving home. Told as a youngster his birth country was Wales, he was entranced – and a natural admirer of Dylan Thomas. Years later he discovered that borders had mysteriously shifted, or the English had usurped “Colwell”, his parents home-village at the time.

To this day Colwell and Malvern remain firmly rooted in England, and hosted W.H. Auden’s moment of Right,35,-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_“revelatory experience”.

As one of a tribe of six siblings, deciphering the concepts of fact and fiction was mandatory for survival, as was packing battered English bags for their numerous trips to and from Southern Africa; moving residence to new locations, alternately far north and far south of the equator.

Despite leaving the “fine art of facts” to scientists, both poetry and fiction remain his constant companions. He is an ardent reader, and now enjoys writing full time.

Peter Standish Evans has two children, and divides his time somewhat equally between Europe and South Africa. He holds a degree in English Literature from Natal University and a Masters from Witwatersrand University.

Ominous: Borders: Coffee (A Paris Thriller)” is his first novel, and he is working on the sequel, “The circle of dark squares”. He has a published poetry collection “Red Winds Howl”, which has been described as “a blend of 303 bullets and tequila”.

“From the first pages this wonderful thriller hooks one into the story with its interesting and disturbing characters, it’s sensory explorations and the layered complexity of psychology and humanity. The French setting with a minor African riff and the detail of food, wine, coffee and poetry makes for a mentally stimulating ride. This is a page turner that I wish could have gone on longer.”

Are You an Eligible US Author?

.

yosemite_27_bg_090604_SourcePDPhoto.org

yosemite_27_bg_090604_SourcePDPhoto.org

.
.
Starting in January 2013, some famous authors become eligible to reclaim their work, such as Stephen King, Judy Blume or John LeCarre.  US publishers face the loss of their back lists as authors begin using the Copyright Act to reclaim works they assigned years ago, for example these New York Times bestsellers from 1978:
.

  • Jackie Oh  by Kitty Kelley
  • Illusions  by Richard Bach
  • Chesapeake  by James A. Michener
  • Robert Kennedy and his Times  by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.
  • A Time for Truth  by William E. Simon
  • Fools Die  by Mario Puzo
    .

Section 203 of the 1978 Copyright Act allows authors to cut away any contract after 35 years. It was set up to protect young artists who signed away future best sellers for a pittance.
.

In many cases, before Section 203 came into law, the author had signed away their rights. The new law has fewer such loopholes and will also mean that nearly every book published after 1978 becomes eligible for termination. These new options mean authors have more leverage to walk away from their publishers altogether.
.

Authors have a five-year window to exercise the right but must also provide advance notice at least two years but no more than 10 years beforehand.
.

Many authors are simply unaware of their options, others may prefer to seek a sweeter deal with their publishers, rather than fly solo or risk a lawsuit. The Authors Guild and copyright lawyers can help with plain English explanations.

Simon & Schuster Joins Forces With Author Solutions To Rip Off Writers

Author Solutions are in the business of ripping people off – that’s how David Gaughran says it bluntly.  Maybe I was to cautious in my article.  Read the sad truth how they take advantage of writers from another source too and please: BEWARE!

First Penguin – now Simon & Schuster Wants Your Money

.

.

… or how reputable publishers turn into “Vanity Publishers”
.

They will not publish authors in the first place – and then they try to fleece them and charge them for “self-publishing” which is also called “Vanity Publishing”.   Simon & Schuster, four largest English-language publishers, through its Archway Publishing seeks writers who “self-publish” fiction, nonfiction, business and children’s books and let them pay for author services.

Archway Publishing will be run with help from Author Solutions and includes “editorial, design, distribution and marketing services” for authors.  The cost for these “services” range from $1,999 Author package to $14,999.   Read about their pricing / royalties in the FAQ’s.
.

Their royalty samples :

Book Retail Price $17.95
– $9.87 (55% Wholesale Discount)
= $8.08 (Net after Wholesale Discount)
– $4.97 Printing costs
= $3.11 Net
x 50% (Royalty Rate)
= $1.56 Royalty Earned from a retail sale
.

Book Retail Price $17.95
– $4.97 Printing costs
= $12.98 Net
x 50% (Royalty Rate)
= $6.49 Royalty Earned from their website sales
(My comment: If ever anyone buys from their un-known website)
.

When do they pay royalties? After five! months… e.g. First Quarter: January 1 to March 31 (checks are mailed in late May)

.

Here are more snippets from their press release:
The following services will be Archway Publishing exclusives:
Concierge Service – Authors will have the option to work with a dedicated publishing guide who will coordinate each step of the book production process.
Bookseller Catalog – Archway titles will be included in Edelweiss, the leading, industry-wide online catalog available to major retailers, wholesalers, libraries, bloggers and thousands of industry professionals.
The Archway Speakers Bureau, powered by Speakerfile, helps authors connect to a world of potential speaking “opportunities” and establish themselves as credible voices in their fields.
Premier Video Production and Distribution – Archway authors will have the “opportunity” to create high-quality videos and book trailers for distribution to major online video networks.
All these “services” can easily done by an author – they don’t need to employ a vanity publisher for it.

Another press release from Penguin tells “150K writers have used the services of Author Solutions” and sold total of 190K books, which means a little bit more than 1 book per author.  Go figure…

Secret of a Terrific Guest Blog

.

.

There is a fantastic way to gain exposure for your book here on this blog: Guest Posting.
Authors asked me so many times about the concept of guest blog posting, that I am summarizing it here again:
.
The whole idea is to create a well-written article and contribute to a successful blog that has many readers to whom you can introduce yourself as an author. Get not only your name out, show off your writing skills, give useful tips (or write about mistakes you learned from) but also have a link to your book sales page, included in a short bio, to invite readers to check out your book and buy it.  Your guest blog will not only appear on this site, but also dozens of times over a period of months on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr, StumpleUpon and Google+ to ten thousands of readers.

.

Do some brainstorming:

  • What would you have done differently while writing / editing / publishing
  • Is there any advice you would give new writers
  • What was your biggest book marketing success so far
  • What are your experiences with editors, publishers, book cover artists etc.
  • Are there any publishing news you would like to share
  • What is the secret of your books success

.
There is so much to write about your experience!

Blog articles should be new and unpublished, content rich and pertain to the craft or business of writing, editing, publishing, or book marketing. Best length is between 500 and 800 words. Get more tips here in former blog posts:

And Actually … by Denise Deegan

The Butterfly Novels form a series of contemporary YA books set in an elite school in South Dublin. Called the Irish OC, they follow the stories of three sixteen-year-old friends, Sarah, Alex and Rachel.
Each book is told from a different girl’s point of view.  All of them tackle big issues affecting teenagers today.  Whether laughing or crying, they are books that make you feel.
.
“When I first met Alex and Sarah – in detention – they treated me like I was normal. A human being.  They actually liked me – thought it took a while to trust that. I’ve never told them about my life before I met them. I wanted a new one.
A fresh start.  Now, they think I’m the strong one, the one with all the answers, the guru. No clue why.  When I get a part in a TV drama it’s all my dreams come true.  It’ll also bring me face-to-face with someone from my past.  But I’m a different person now.  And I’m sure Rebecca is too.  No matter what, there’s no way I’m going to let my past destroy my future.”
Available at Amazon
.
Reviews
‘Expect more of the same sharp dialogue, realistic romance and characters so believable that they stay with you long after you’ve finished reading.’
Kiss Magazine
‘Deegan has done it again. Not only is AND ACTUALLY… as addictive a read as the previous two books in the series, but it also has the same level of powerful drama and emotion, with some breath-taking scenes. There’s also the wonderful Dublin setting, and sparkling, fast-paced dialogue, complete with humor. (When Rachel introduces us to her agent, she says: “think Edna Mode from The Incredibles but tone it down a bit; she’s Irish”.)’
Chicklish
.
About the author:
When Denise was young she wanted to be adopted, have buck teeth and a broken leg. She has achieved none of these things.  She has, however, been a nurse, a china restorer, a pharmaceutical sales representative, a public relations consultant, an entrepreneur and a college lecturer.

Even if You Landed a Publishing Deal…

.

In my last post I explained the reasons why I created an individual online Book Marketing seminar for authors, using one-on-one instruction. To get help in promoting a book is not only important for self-publishers, but also in case you landed a publishing deal.  Your publisher will NOT place ads in the NY Times, book promotion is up to YOU!  The first questions a literary agent or a publisher will ask you: What is your platform? Who are your target readers? How will you promote your book?
.

.

Are you one of those writers, hiding behind your laptop, terrified at the thought of “marketing”, because your skill is writing – not marketing? Authors need BOOK PROMOTION, but don’t want to appear like a “used car salesman”.  However remember: “Nobody ever made money writing a book – only by selling it”.
The Most Valuable Book Marketing Help You Can Get !

Individual training and customized marketing consultations for your book at an amazing offer!!! Register now to get started on your road to success: Book now, in November or December, and get 3 months of individual marketing training & promotion for your book – for only $59.00.   Regular price after December 31, 2012 will be $98.00.

And, the only way to do that is to let go of the past.  That does not mean discount the life you have lived; rather, it means learn from your hardships and mistakes and then let them go, so you can move forward to create your perfect future.
.

The Past Can Be Haunting if You Allow it.
Failed relationships, bad business decisions, trusting someone unworthy of trust.  When you break it down, what people fear most is rejection and failure. This fear often keeps you looking over your shoulder, always on guard for the past creeping up to derail you.
.

Don’t Let You Hold Back
Fear cripples your ability to move successfully forward. When you live your life, looking over your shoulder fearing the past, you can’t see the opportunities right in front of you!  The good news is that fear doesn’t have to hold you back.”

The Psalter by Galen Watson

.

.

The Psalter

Father Romano has run afoul of the modern inquisitors before. This time, it leads to a medieval manuscript and murder. Was it an ordinary theft gone wrong or something more?
The Carabinieri in Rome would like to know.

Michael Romano is an American priest working in the Vatican’s Secret Archives with a penchant for stepping over the line. Church Inquisitors have noticed — and aren’t happy. Nevertheless, Romano is also the Church’s senior paleographer, an expert in ancient manuscripts, and his expertise is needed to examine a ninth-century prayer book known as a Psalter.

Father Romano’s examination leads him into the past as he uncovers an historical narrative of medieval forgeries, Saracen invasions and a legendary fight for the richest kingdom on earth. Yet he has unwittingly become a target for those who will stop at nothing to possess the secret of the Psalter.
.

Biography
Galen Watson has a degree in French literature. He lives between the Sierra Nevada and Paris. When he’s not writing, he’s bistro hopping or tramping the mountains. He also admits to being a closet banjo picker. The Psalter is his first novel.  http://galenwatson.blogspot.com
