How Far Would You Go in the Name of Research?

.
Research

.

Margaret K Johnson asks:  How far would you go in the name of research?
We have all heard about method actors who go to extreme lengths to get into character for their roles. These actors feel they need to really experience the lives of their characters.  For example, to play the character of Christy Brown in My Left Foot about a disabled man, Daniel Day-Lewis refused to leave his wheelchair for the whole duration of the filming. Robert de Niro became a taxi driver for his role in Taxi Driver, and learnt to box for Raging Bull. It’s also very common for actors to gain or lose weight for their roles – Christian Bale weighed only 122 pounds for his role in The Machinist, and Ann Hathaway lost 25 pounds and cut off all her hair for her role in Les Miserables.
.
What about Writers?
These days we almost take such behavior by actors for granted.  But what about writers?  Do we need to deliberately set out to experience situations for the sake of our writing?  Surely not. After all, we are writers – we should have enough imagination without doing that, right?
.
Well, actually, yes and no.  I think it depends on what you’re writing about.  Authors of detective stories are not going to kill people to find out what it feels like to be a murderer.  At least, I hope not!  But they are likely to draw on their experience of grief when writing about the victims of such crimes.
.
When I was writing my novel The Dare Club, which is about a group of newly-separated people setting each other challenges in order to forget about their problems, I found that there were some things I could easily imagine – for example gate-crashing a total stranger’s 40th birthday party.  But when one of my characters wanted to perform stand-up comedy, I knew I would have to have a go at it myself. How else would I find out how to come up with material, to prepare for a performance, or to deal with the sheer, blinding terror of actually performing?
.
Stand-Up Comedy Class fto Research
So, with everyone telling me how brave I was, I duly booked myself on a weekend stand-up comedy course in London.  And then, two months later, I returned to perform a 3-minute stand-up comedy routine in a Greenwich comedy club.  Here’s a link to a clip of me performing, in case you don’t believe me!  It was a completely amazing – if terrifying – experience, and it really gave me an insight that I was able to use in my writing:
.
Now I’ve got a taste for challenging myself, in the future I might even choose to write novels that involve me doing exciting research. Though maybe not quite in the way I stated at the end of my stand-up comedy performance.
People say to me – “If you wrote murder fiction, would you actually kill someone to find out what it feels like?” I say, of course not.  But I might put an orgy in my next book…
.

.
For more grant offers, check out this website periodically:  Res Artis (can be sorted by deadlines or countries, however not all listed are free, some are paid retreats). Read also my former posts: Get the Money! Apply! and 10 Important Steps when Applying for Grants.

Everyone knows Kickstarter and IndieGoGo in the meantime. But there are other sources to fund writing projects, workshops, prints, publicizing efforts or lectures. Writers and small publishers are offered quite a number of grants and funding money.  Most are geared towards projects, rather than core funding. Think writing projects for example instead of business/office supply or salaries.
Show an interest in the Funders’ organization, call them for further information and find out the name of the person you should address the proposal if it is not stated specifically.

Study the organization and successful grants. Some of them make samples of grant proposals they have funded online available. You can see the “language” they prefer and get an idea what type of projects were successful. Learn and understand the meanings of the vocabulary being used in grant guidelines. It’s important how well your written presentation answers their questions.

3 Writing-Centers in Massachusetts

.
Getting Support Before You Write the First Word

By Bart Stewart
Many writers buy into the myth of the literary hermit, the idea that writing is a solitary craft suitable for lone rangers only. It was probably never true, and certainly it is not now.
.

Cape-Cod

Cape Cod

.
Most of us understand that once you achieve that manuscript of wonder and glory you will need to have an independent editor go over it. No matter what your English Composition grades looked like, a fresh pair of eyes and a different viewpoint is crucial. No-one can do without it. We also know that when a book is finally declared finished, one must choose a service to help promote and market it. But beyond that, it is best to have a creative support, before you write word number one of your book.
.
Writing Critique
We always have friends and relatives reading our work, and that’s fine for gauging what a general reader enjoys. But you can’t depend entirely on these folks, because they are unavoidably biased, and will always hold back tough criticism. Sad to say, you have to rely on the kindness of strangers. This means a choice between joining a free writer’s group or something closer to a proper school. The latter can be pricey, but chances are you will get what you pay for.
.
Writers Groups
A free writers group can be helpful, or at least better than nothing. It is interesting, though, how many stand-up comedy routines exist about them! You must go in with no assurance at all that the other participants are going to be any better than you are at writing, or even sane, or that there will be any compatibility in terms of the kind of writing to be discussed. A writer who wants to do gritty, realistic, literary fiction will only gain just so much from one who wants to do sword-and-sorcery. (Not to say there could not be some benefit, or at least a friendship.) Even if you join a genre-specific group it can be a sub-optimal experience.
.
College/university classes, including credit
At the other end of the spectrum, colleges and universities offer Master of Fine Arts programs  (MFA), and while there is no substitute for these in terms of quality, they are naturally expensive and time-consuming. A happy medium for the dedicated author might be a quality writers’ center. This is best thought of as a school, but there are no degrees and the cost is a fraction of the university. What you are looking for in a writers’ center is a track record, in terms of the instructors, if not the center itself.

Writers Center
Two that I can vouch for are located in Massachusetts:

Norman Mailer Writers Colony
In Provincetown, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, you will also find the Norman Mailer Writers Colony, part of New York’s Norman Mailer Center.
.

Grub-Street

Grub Street Writers Center

Grub Street, Boston, MA
If you don’t find anything nearby, take heart. Grub Street is one of the largest independent writer centers in America, and it will begin offering online classes this year. From their site:
“Grub Street will introduce a few new online courses each term, revising the format as we go and building on what has worked well in previous classes. Our students and instructors are partners in this process, and we seek advice from everyone in our virtual community as we create a robust program of top-notch online offerings.”
For some courses you will still no doubt need proximity to Boston. Grub has an incredible year-long program called the “Novel Incubator”, which only select authors can get into, and which provides the kind of intense development of a novel you would only find in an MFA program. A wide-ranging program for teen writers is available. Grub Street also has one of the nation’s biggest writers’ conferences. The Muse and the Marketplace draws writers from coast to coast with its outstanding speakers and seminars.

.

You don’t really have to start with a writing center before you get started writing your book. They can help a project along at any stage. Chances are you’re not contemplating the writer’s life without at least having some basic groundwork done. It is a difficult life, but the rewards are not to be found elsewhere. My advice is—don’t go it alone. You don’t have to.

.
Bart Stewart is the author of Tales of Real and Dream Worlds, a collection of surreal short stories in the school of Richard Matheson. It won a finalist prize at the 2008 National Indie Excellence Awards. His debut novel Painter of the Heavens is a psychological thriller. By turns funny, poignant, and suspenseful, it deals with a woman who becomes romantically involved with a con artist. Painter of the Heavens launches on Kindle this fall.

HAPPY CANADA DAY !!! HAPPY CANADIAN WRITERS!

.
Canadian-Flag
.

July 1 is Canada’s National Day, and today’s blog post is dedicated to everything Canadian. The Canadian government is supporting and fostering literature, writers and publishers, even ISBN’s are FREE in Canada!
.
There is a huge list of government grants and support for writers and publishers. The Canada Council for the Arts offers a range of benefits for professional Canadian writers, collectives and publishers.  In addition to providing support for the creation, translation, publication and promotion of Canadian literature, the “Writing and Publishing Section” funds among others for example author residencies, literary readings and festivals, as well as new areas of activity such as rap poetry, storytelling and electronic literature.
.

PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT BENEFITS
Just one of many provincial benefits for publishers is the Ontario Book Publishing Tax Credit, offering  generous tax deductions.
.

WHERE and HOW TO OBTAIN A FREE ISBN IN CANADA
Good news for Canadian authors and publishers: the ISBN application process is simple and free of charge – but only if you are living in Canada and your publishing company is registered in Canada.
.

COPYRIGHT CANADA
What Every Writer Needs to Know About Copyright. Register your manuscript or articles online to the Copyright Office, Canadian Intellectual Property Office Web site (fee Can $50).
.

CANADA’s ONLINE BOOK RETAILERS
Mobile media and cloud computing emerged over the past years and enabled the e-book market to rapidly expand worldwide. These are just a few of the numerous possibilities to submit e-books in and to Canada:

CANADIAN WRITERS DON’T NEED AGENTS
“You must get an agent!” is an advice that aspiring authors hear and read everywhere. Is it really true? Not for Canadian writers! Beacon Literary Services owner Julie Ferguson says: ”Publishing statistics in Canada demonstrate that it is simply a misconception caused by American influence. In Canada, only ten percent of books are agented. Aspiring and established authors here successfully submit the majority (10,000) of the titles published every year directly to editors.”  Julie Ferguson wrote a great blog post for Canadian authors, explaining in detail how publishing “north of 49th parallel” works, with a link to Publishers.ca, featuring listings and contact information for several important literary agents and agencies in Canada.

.
CANADIAN SHORT STORY PRIZE 2013
Canada Writes, with partners CBC, Canada Council for the Arts, Air Canada’s enRoute magazine and “The Banff Centre”, are pleased to announce the Grand Prize winner will receive $6,000, courtesy of the Canada Council for the Arts, and will have his/her story published in Air Canada’s enRoute magazine and on the Canada Writes website. She or he will also be awarded a two-week residency at The Banff Centre’s Leighton Artists’ Colony, and will be interviewed on CBC Radio. The 4 runners-up will each receive $1,000, courtesy of the Canada Council for the Arts, and their stories will be published on the Canada Writes website.
.

WRITE FOR AIR CANADA INFLIGHT MAGAZINE “ENROUTE”
Writing for airline magazines, such as enRoute represents a real opportunity for freelance writers. Travel pieces are a staple of in-flights, yet airline publications also offer articles on technology, business, sports, and food, as well as lifestyle trends. Find as much of the articles online. Or try to get hard copies. Since in-flights are not sold on newsstands, request a copy from the magazine’s publisher and ask traveling friends for their help.

HOW TO OPEN A PUBLISHING BUSINESS IN CANADA?
Authors are smart and able to start their own publishing business, REAL publishing, not POD and not Vanity Publishing: Finding and getting quotes or referrals for an editor, a book lay-out company or book designer, cover artist, e-book formatting company and a printer is not difficult.
Setting up their own company can be done online – in minutes.
.

READING CANADIAN BOOKS and ARTICLES
English is English! – No! Not at all! Canada and America are two countries separated by a common language – this is how George Bernard Shaw’s statement could be converted. Many American (and other) readers are surprised to learn that there are huge differences in spelling between English-speaking countries. A book, written and published in Canada, needs almost to be “translated” into American English and vice versa.
.
ACCESS Copyright
A study found that 80% of all copies made on copy machines are from books! As a Writer and first-time publisher, back in Europe in the early 1980′s, I was thrilled to receive a copy-royalty cheque for $180.00 from VG WORT.
Later I found out that the same system works well in Canada under the name ACCESS COPYRIGHT. One of the benefits of being a small publisher or trade-published writer in Canada! However you must have set up a small business in Canada, if you are not with an established (not Vanity) publisher ACCESS COPYRIGHT explains on their website.
.

BERTON HOUSE Writers’ Retreat, Dawson City, Yukon Territory
Professional Canadian writers who have one published book and are established in any creative literary discipline(s) — fiction, non-fiction, poetry, play-writing, journalism — are all encouraged to apply for Canada’s most northern Writers’ Retreat.  The Writer’s Retreat offers writers time, and a remote location to pursue their professional projects. The writer will be housed in the Berton House at no cost in rent or utilities. Travel costs to and from Dawson will also be covered! The writer is responsible for a public reading in Whitehorse and Dawson City and a summary of their stay at Berton House.
Applications may be submitted by mail or email to: jdavies@writerstrust.com
Berton House Writers’ Retreat,  c/o The Writers’ Trust of Canada
200-90 Richmond St. East, Toronto, ON M5C 1P1
http://www.bertonhouse.ca/retreat.html

A monthly honorarium is provided to help cover food and other living expenses. The competition to be a writer-in-residency during the 2014-15 season is now open. An online application form is available.  The deadline for submissions is October 4, 2013.

You Are Not Alone – Get a Mentor

.
You Are Not Alone
.

You just wanted to write – and upload your book to Amazon, expecting that it becomes an instant hit. The writing – your skills – an art you mastered, is making you proud. However the publishing / marketing process feels scary … and you never before thought about becoming an entrepreneur.
.

Sure, you know all the benefits of self-publishing:

  • Author-publishing brought your book much faster to market, than waiting almost two years till it hits the shelves, even if you got a publishing contract
  • The marketing part will always be completely on you, no matter if you self-publish or if you go with a big traditional publisher
  • As a self-publisher you keep full control over the book design, the sales outlets, the price and the time your book will be on the market (maybe forever) – just to name a few
  • if your book is successful you can make a lot more money than a “published author”

.
You learned a lot already:
You read all the blog articles how to become a real author-publisher, even with printed books and their distribution to bookstores, running from April 8 – April 13 on https://savvybookwriters.wordpress.com/

.
But you still have many questions… it seems, as if you have to learn a complete new profession. Wouldn’t it be great to have someone on your site to help you with:

  • all the details of the e-book and print book production process
  • how readers can find your book on Amazon, B&N, Kobo, Apple etc.
  • how you can create your “platform” and establish a brand as a writer
  • how you set up a blog/website and a social media presence
  • which reader forums you should join
  • … plus all these questions you did not even know to ask
    .

The Value of Mentor-ship
We do not only work for our clients during the time you actually book us, but long after, giving you regularly tips and news.  The articles we write about your book will stay on our sites forever.
With our help, self-publishing and book marketing can become an enjoyable journey for you: We help you to save time, money and efforts in your publishing / book marketing process.
.

Take Advantage of Our Professional Help
We have studied business, marketing and e-publishing and have 30 years publishing experience. We customize coaching to your needs and teach you:

  • how you can establish a brand as a writer
  • the publishing and retail possibilities
  • all the pre-publishing book marketing steps
  • blogging & automatic posting of your articles to Twitter, FB, Google+, Goodreads…
  • how to save a lot of time using social media sites for reader contacts
  • researching your possible competition & popularity of genres/positioning
  • how to identify your target readers & plan your blog content & marketing strategies
  • how to find lots of readers, book bloggers & reviewers
  • … and the list goes on and on. Don’t forget: Writing is an art – publishing a business!

.
Would you learn to drive a car or fly a plane without instructor?
It is frightening first, but once you have learned it – with a professional instructor on your site – gaining self-confidence, it becomes sheer pleasure for you. Everything you accomplished in life makes you proud and is fun doing. So will be author-publishing and book marketing!

Arriving with the cruise ship in Nassau do as the locals do: Sway to the rhythms of steel-pan bands; savor fresh conch in Arawak Cay or sip cold Kalik beer to beat the heat. The charms of this tropical isle revolve around sun, sea, and sand Or you can shop at the lively markets in Nassau’s town center.  You will have lots of time to hit the shops.  What if you don’t like shopping?  If you rather prefer to have a leisurely time on the beaches and gardens of one of Nassau’s big hotels?  They offer day passes to use their pools, their very clean beaches and recreational sports equipment, such as snorkel equipment or kayaks.   Don’t miss a dip in the turquoise Atlantic. If you are looking for an inexpensive alternative to day passes at the Atlantis Resort, choose either the Nassau Sheraton or the RUI Palace Beach Resort.

Be Spoiled for Choice …

.

… how you want to learn book promotion.  And there is a lot to learn: Publishing evolves constantly and the success of your book(s) is very much depending on you, no matter if you self-publish or if you go with one of the big publishers.

Choices in publishing, essentials of book / e-book layout and design, your platform and brand,  optimizing social media, use of non-traditional ways of book marketing, book distribution, online retailers, learning about  marketing on a shoestring… it’s over-whelming.  But not if you get help from someone who has studied e-publishing and marketing for many years – and practices it all.

Choose between weekend seminars or sign-up for customized online marketing training (special offer in December)

… or plan ahead for a publishing and book marketing seminar on a 5-day Caribbean Cruise on board of the Carnival Breeze, a brand new cruise liner, taking off in Miami, FL, on November 3, 2013.  Make your travel plans soon, bookings for this offer start at the end of this month!

Cruise Seminars for Writer and Publishers

.
Crystal Cruises’ World Cruise segments can be a voyage of learning and self-discovery, offering guests literally hundreds of hours of expert instruction as your ship cruises through the world.
.

.

Chris Owen is a travel writer from Orlando Florida. He mentions in his blog the February 2, 2013  24-day world cruise segment from Lima to Buenos Aires that has dozens of stimulating classes, hands-on lessons and interactive workshops in everything from golf to global affairs, from Pilates to painting, from memoir writing to magic.

Just to name a few:

  • Carnival Breeze

How to appreciate Chilean wine through visits to Chile’s Napa-like Casablanca Valley

How to perfect your swing in PGA pro-led golf clinic

Improve computer skills through Crystal’s own Computer University@Sea

  • How to tell your story during reflective memoir-writing workshops

.
.
However, not everyone has time for a 24-day cruise or wants to spend that amount of money. What about a 5-day / 6-night Bahama cruise, that offers valuable hands-on seminars in publishing and book marketing – for not even a tenth of the price? Stay tuned for more information.  And the best of all: you can deduct parts of your cruise from your taxes.  http://writers.thecruiseevent.com
