Would you like a free work-vacation stay, maybe in Paris, France or in Bellagio, Italy? Sometimes even paid… as a Writer-in-Residency? Book mark these tips and links and check periodically the deadlines for grants, fellowships or writers residencies. Besides accommodation, writers often receive a stipend and travel expenses paid. Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio, Italy, Residencies
Four-week residencies between March 10 and July 31, 2015. Open to composers, novelists, playwrights, poets, video/filmmakers and visual artists from around the globe, with the goal of bringing together people of diverse expertise and cultures in a thought-provoking creative environment. Spouses/life partners may accompany the resident, or may apply for a concurrent residency. The Center also offers collaborative residencies for two to four persons working on the same project.
Must demonstrate a history of significant achievement in their discipline. Individuals from developing countries and young artists with significant accomplishments — exhibitions, publications, performances — are particularly encouraged to apply. Residency provides housing and studio/work space. Residents are responsible for travel, food, and materials.

Grant / Residency California and Arizona
The Creatives selected will be awarded a one-year opportunity to engage the residents in one of two affordable housing communities in Southern California and Phoenix, AZ to ignite social change through sustainable practices and programs. The Creatives selected – individual and or collective groups, will be given housing (or a housing stipend), a working stipend, and a small budget to execute their projects.

Hedgebrook Residency
Hedgebrook retreat for women writers is on Whidbey Island, about thirty-five miles northwest of Seattle. Situated on 48 acres of forest and meadow facing Puget Sound, with a view of Mount Rainier, the retreat hosts women writers from all over the world for residencies of two to six weeks, at no cost to the writer.

Jentel Residency
Jentel has two sessions and two deadlines. All application materials, including contact information, resume, work sample, and reference contacts must be completed online through Submittable by September 15, 2014 for the January 15 – May 13, 2015 residencies. The Jentel Artist Residency Program lies in the Lower Piney Creek Valley with spectacular views over scoria topped hills to the majestic Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming.

The Japan Creative Artist Residencies Program awards up to five three-month residencies, each of which includes a monthly stipend of $20,000 for living expenses, housing, and professional support. Open to published U.S. poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers to live in Japan and pursue creative projects. Each residency also includes a travel grant of up to $2,000. Writers who have published a book or at least 20 poems in five or more journals or five stories or essays in two or more journals are eligible.

American Library in Paris – Visiting Fellowship
The Visiting Fellowship offers writers and researchers an opportunity to pursue book projects in Paris for a month or longer while participating actively in the life of the American Library. The Fellowship award, a stipend of $5,000 is intended to cover travel and housing costs for the Visiting Fellow. He or she will be expected to present the work-in-progress to the public in a weekday evening talk at the Library and to conduct one or two workshops for Library members on a subject of common interest. Fellowship applicants should be working on a book-length project, fiction or non-fiction, which resonates with the Library’s Franco-American traditions and interests and which might benefit from an extended presence in Paris.

Georgia Fee Artist/Writer Residency, Paris, France
The goal of the Georgia Fee Artist/Writer Residency in Paris is to support and invest in emerging artists and writers, to provide an opportunity for them to advance their work and explore and engage with the cultural landscape of Paris, to encourage experimentation, and to increase exposure of their work to an international audience. The Residency is open to visual artists of all mediums, art writers, critics, poets, and creative writers, 24 years or older. Recent graduates are especially encouraged to apply. Applications start in February and stay open about a month.

Hambidge, GA, Residencies
Apply through April 15th for the September through December residency period. Hambidge provides a residency program that empowers talented artists to explore, develop, and express their creative voices. Situated on 600 acres in the mountains of north Georgia, Hambidge is a sanctuary of time and space that inspires artists working in a broad range of disciplines to create works of the highest caliber.

9 Writer Residencies, Grants and Funding

Earlier this month we wrote already about it:  Winter and early spring are good times to apply for Writer Grants, which includes fellowships, workshops, residencies, travel expenses, sometimes even meals or small allowances … and not only in North America, but worldwide. Here are nine additional tips and addresses where you can apply.

Australian Publishing and Promotion Grants
This grant supports Australian book publishers and overseas publishers to publish literary work by Australian writers and supports innovative publishing projects that contribute to the development of Australian culture.  Applications are accepted from: Australian book publishers (established and emerging publishers), overseas book and magazine publishers.
The Literature Board will accept applications from Australian and overseas organisations for support towards airfares, fees and expenses for the participation of Australian writers at literary festivals and conferences and other promotional activities.

Art Kibbutz Residency Program / Scholarship
Art Kibbutz is delighted to announce the launch its spring residency program at Eden Village Camp – a spectacular 248-acre venue bordered on three sides by the wooded hills of Clarence Fahnestock State Park in the Hudson Valley, 50 miles north of New York City.
The pilot residency provides participants with the power to shape an innovative new program, the only one of its kind to explore creative art, Jewish teachings and tradition and environmental awareness. Scholarships are available based on need. Art Kibbutz will also work with accepted artists to find funding for their other expenses; provide letters of invitation and prepare individualized budgets. Artists are expected to participate in events that foster relationships with the international Jewish community.

Atlantic Center for the Arts New Smyrna, FL
During the residency, artists participate in informal sessions with their group, interact/collaborate, and work independently on their own projects. The relaxed atmosphere, unstructured program and lush, unspoiled environment provide considerable time for artistic experimentation, exploration and creation. Location New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Harlem Community Arts Fund
Grants from US $1,000 – $3,000 for artists and arts organizations based in and providing services within the Harlem community. Individual artists of all disciplines of literary, media, visual, music, and performing arts may apply to support specific, forthcoming professional development opportunities or the cost of a work in progress. Jack Jerouac Writer in Residency
Provides four residencies a year to writers of any stripe or age, living anywhere in the world. Each residency consists of approximately a three-month stay in the cottage where Jack Kerouac wrote his novel Dharma Bums.

Rhode Island Fellowship Grants
Rhode Island artists who have created a substantial body of work that they are prepared to present in a professional manner are encouraged to apply for a RISCA Fellowship award. Artists who are residents of Rhode Island, and working in the disciplines of: Film & Video, Fiction, Photography, Play/Screenwriting, Poetry and Three-Dimensional Art can apply for one $5,000 Fellowship and one $1000 Fellowship Merit Award in each discipline annually.

The Writer’s Center Bethesda, MD – Fellowship
Three fellowships are given annually to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers. Fellows who live within a 250-mile radius of the center receive a $250 honorarium each, and others receive $500 each. Fellows also give a reading at the Writer’s Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Poets who have published no more than three books and prose writers who have published no more

Bogliasco Foundation
Bogliasco, Italy. Residencies of an average of 32 days for qualified persons engaged in advanced creative work or scholarly research in archaeology, architecture, classics, dance, film/video, history, landscape architecture, literature, music, philosophy, theatre, and visual arts.
Residency provides housing, meals, and studios. Artist are responsible for travel, materials, and any additional living expenses.

Hub City Residency
The Writers House provides two residencies per year in a historic cottage in downtown Spartanburg, S.C. The program is open to emerging writers in the United States who have completed a graduate school degree in creative writing within the past five years.
Residents receive lodging, utilities, and a twice-monthly stipend; they are responsible for their own transportation and meals. The 10-week summer residency runs from June 15 to Aug. 24. A nine-month residency runs from September 3 to May 31of the following year. Both residencies include a community service element. The program is targeted at early-career writers, preferably without a published book.

Everyone knows Kickstarter and IndieGoGo in the meantime. But there are other sources to fund writing projects, workshops, prints, publicizing efforts or lectures. Writers and small publishers are offered quite a number of grants and funding money.  Most are geared towards projects, rather than core funding. Think writing projects for example instead of business/office supply or salaries.
Show an interest in the Funders’ organization, call them for further information and find out the name of the person you should address the proposal if it is not stated specifically.

Study the organization and successful grants. Some of them make samples of grant proposals they have funded online available. You can see the “language” they prefer and get an idea what type of projects were successful. Learn and understand the meanings of the vocabulary being used in grant guidelines. It’s important how well your written presentation answers their questions.

APPLY: 13 Residencies and Grants for US Writers

New Year means new resolutions. Why not this one: finding space and time to work on your goals and write uninterrupted from daily chores and demands?  It is a myth that you have to be famous in order to receive a grant or become a writer-in-residence.  Most people who are awarded grants are on their way up, not already there. Unnecessary fear of being rejected prevents a lot of writers from applying for opportunities that are out there. But the numbers are in your favor: in average, 1 in 3 applications will be granted. 

If you have never written a grant proposal before, do some research on the topic before you begin. Numerous how-to listings and guidelines offer insights to novice grant writers, and even those with experience. Understand the meanings of the vocabulary being used in grant guidelines. As more applications you write, as easier and faster it gets.

360 XOCHI QUETZEL Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico
This FREE one-month artist residency on Lake Chapala in central Mexico, will serve artists, especially fiber artists and writers. Cactoctin Mountain Park, MD
The Artist-In-Residence, including writers, will spend two weeks immersed in the natural and cultural resources of the Catoctin Mountains in Maryland. During this residency, the artist will produce a novel work and share the artistic process with the public. Application may be made for one- or two- week periods. The Catoctin Forest Alliance will accept applications for the Artist-In-Residence Program no later than February 15, 2014

The Artist-In-Residence 
Program at the Petrified Forest offers professional WRITERS, composers, and visual and performing artists the opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the park’s inspiring landscape. Selected artists stay in a historic cabin for two-week periods from June through September.
Artists will present two public programs during their residency. This interaction can be tailored to an individual’s medium, interest, and experience using only a few hours during the residency period. Programs can be demonstrations, talks, exploratory walks, or performances. In addition to the park, the nearby community college art department can be used as a public program venue.

The Lillian E. Smith Foundation Writer-in-Service Award
It includes a two-week residency, a $500 honorarium, and a $300 travel allowance, and is given once a year. The Award is open to residents of the United Sates working to advance the arts through public service careers or volunteer work. Eligible activities include, but are not limited to, arts education, literacy instruction, prison arts and education, English as a second language instruction, art-related therapies, etc. The Writer-in-Service Award residency, Smith Center in Clayton, Georgia, in 2013 provides two weeks of peaceful solitude to focus a new or ongoing writing project. This award provides an opportunity for those writers who like Lillian E. Smith recognize “the power of the arts to transform the lives of all human beings.” Deadline November 15, 2014.

Maine Fellowships
The Individual Artist Fellowships reward artistic excellence, advance the careers of Maine artists and promote public awareness regarding the eminence of the creative sector in Maine. The Maine Arts Commission offers five fellowships annually in functional craft, literature, visual arts, performing/media arts and traditional arts. Literary Arts deadline May 2, 2014. Grant amount: $13,000.

Colorado Jumpstart Awards
Jumpstart Awards provide fresh energy to writers, artists and creative entrepreneurs to help stimulate their creative business or organization, whether non-profit or commercial. The end goal is that grantees will achieve tangible business benefits, such as increased revenue, new audiences or improved management practices. Deadline: June 19, 2014. The maximum request is $4,000 if your arts income in 2013 was between $25,000 and $99,000. Funds are paid on a reimbursement basis upon receipt of final report and expense receipts.

The Lighthouse Works Fellowships
Fellowships are six weeks in length and occur year-round. The Lighthouse Works provides fellows with housing, food, studio space for six weeks, a $250 travel allowance and a stipend of $1,500.
Fishers Island, NY, is a small island located in the Long Island Sound just off the coast of Connecticut, accessible by ferry from New London, Connecticut, and by private or commuter boat from Noank, Connecticut. The island is isolated, but not remote; New York City and Boston are both within three hours of the island, and public transportation to any major east coast city is easily accessible. Big Cypress National Preserve Residencies, FL
The Artist-In-Residence Program at Big Cypress National Preserve offers professional writers, composers, and visual and performing artists the opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the preserve’s inspiring landscape. Selected artists stay in a dormitory setting, with each person having their own room, and sharing living room / dining room / kitchen and bathroom space. Big Cypress primarily looks for short-term (less than one month) and long-term (one to three months) residents during our wet (May through October) and dry (November through April) seasons.

Sleeping Bear Dunes Ntl Park, MI
The Artist-In-Residence program is open to professional American writers, composers and visual artists, including photographers, whose work can be influenced and enhanced by this superb Michigan scene. It provides resident artists the opportunity to capture the moods of Sleeping Bear Dunes in their particular medium. The program provides rent-free use of either a campsite in one of the developed mainland campgrounds, or a park house located in the vicinity of the village of Empire. A three-week time block is available during October. The artist is asked to donate to the park an original piece of work representative of their medium, produced during the residency, and to contribute to the advancement of the park’s mission.

Turkeyland Cove Foundation, Massachusetts
For New England and NY State residents only! Turkey Land Cove Foundation offers a personal retreat for motivated women in Edgartown, MA., to pursue their professional, educational and artistic goals, away from the distractions of daily life. TLC Foundation will review the financial circumstances of each applicant and will only make grants to women who could otherwise not afford the period of retreat. Our grants cover room and board plus reasonable transportation expenses. Based on individual need, we will also consider helping fund increased home expenses, necessitated by a caregiver’s absence, as well as goal-related expenses or materials relevant to the purpose of the grant, on a case-by-case basis. After her stay, each grantee will be required to write periodic reports updating the board about her progress towards her goal and how this grant has affected her life. The first report is due within six months of her stay, and then once annually for three years. The deadline for our fall session 2014 (September 15 through February 1, 2015) is June 1, 2014.

The Leeway Foundation
Grants to support women and transgender artists in the Philadelphia area, who create art for social change. Art and Change Grant provides up to $2,500 for project-based work and the Leeway Transformation Award gives $15,000 in unrestricted funds to artists with at least five years experience. Applicant support sessions are an opportunity to meet one-on-one with a Leeway representative to get direct feedback on your application.  Deadline May 15, 2014

Mesa Refuge
The Mesa Refuge is a writers’ retreat located in Point Reyes Station, CA. It is one of the few retreats in the United States that supports people writing about nature, economics and social equity. Since 1998, we have granted residencies to over 500 writers. The Refuge offers two and four-week residencies to writers who need the solitude essential to creative work. Essayists, journalists, economists, naturalists, screenwriters and authors of memoirs. The Refuge hosts three residents at a time. Each enjoys a private room in a spacious shared house. Location Point Reyes Station, California. Room and most dinners are provided at no cost, however donations are welcome. Travel to and from Point Reyes is each resident’s responsibility. Application fee of $25 to cover administrative costs.

North Dakota Fellowships
The Individual Artist Fellowship program recognizes practicing artists residing in North Dakota with a monetary fellowship award. Authors League Fund
This is a “last-minute-resort” kind of loan for authors who got ill and are overwhelmed by medical bills. The Authors League Fund was established by the Authors League of America, Inc., to help career authors and dramatists in the United States and in financial distress due to an urgent situation.
The Fund makes interest-free loans to professional writers in need; for example, writers with health problems and inadequate health insurance, or older writers whose income has ceased.

GRANTS: Writers-in-Residence CANADA

Haig-Brown Writer in Residence, Vancouver Island
.
Published authors are being invited to apply for the 2013-2014 Haig-Brown House Writer in Residence position. The residency entails spending the winter months (or a portion thereof) living in the Haig-Brown Heritage House, which is under the management of the Museum at Campbell River.
For those who are not familiar with the West Coast: Winter on Vancouver Island is almost like Summer in San Francisco.
The very modest four bedroom house reflects the character of writer Roderick Haig-Brown and his wife Ann. Located in a peaceful setting on the banks of the Campbell River on Vancouver Island, it contains a Heritage library and is surrounded by two acres of garden and 17 acres of public parkland.
The writer’s time will be divided between pursuing personal writing projects and providing literary advice and support to the local community, with writing time favored on a 60/40 basis (as per Canada Council’s Author Residencies Program guidelines). The writer would also participate in Museum winter programming.

A stipend of up to $2000 per month, depending on available funding, will be provided.
Please include a resume (maximum two pages), a list of publications, a one-page proposal of anticipated community activities, and a sample of work in progress (20 pages); with reasons why the residency would further your work. Berton House Writers’ Retreat , Dawson City, Yukon Territory

Professional Canadian writers who have one published book and are established in any creative literary discipline(s) — fiction, non-fiction, poetry, playwriting, journalism — are all encouraged to apply.

The following is a list of the possible retreat times:
* January, February, March
* April, May, June
* July, August, September
* October, November, December

The Writers’ Retreat Provides: The Writer’s Retreat offers writers time and a remote location to pursue their professional projects. The writer will be housed in the Berton House at no cost in rent or utilities. A monthly honorarium is provided to help cover food and other living expenses. Travel costs to and from Dawson will be covered!
The writer is responsible for a public reading in Whitehorse and Dawson City and a summary of their stay at Berton House, including any press clippings from local newspapers.

The writer is also encouraged to:
* interface with the public and the local literary community
* feature their work in local newspapers and on local radio stations
* avail themselves for interviews with local media
* hold writing workshops in the community and/or at the schools and colleges

Writers-in-Residency Colorado & Arizona

 You may have read recent blogs how to apply and where to find grants and free writers residencies, perhabs in Oregon, California or Washington State. Here are two more, both in National Parks, on in Colorado and one in Arizona.

Cabin @ Moraine Park

Rocky Mountain Ntl. Park, CO
The Artist-In-Residence Program at Rocky Mountain National Park offers professional WRITERS, composers, and visual and performing artists the opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the park’s inspiring landscape. Selected artists stay in a historic cabin for two-week periods from June through September.
During summer and fall the William Allen White Cabin is the home of Rocky Mountain National Park’s Artist-In-Residence.
The cabin above Moraine Park was the summer retreat of William Allen White from 1912 to 1943. A nationally recognized journalist and editor of the Emporia Gazette (Kansas), White’s spirit lives on with the contemporary artists who work in his cabin today.

The cabin has a high-beamed living/dining area with a large fireplace, one bedroom and bathroom, and a small kitchen. It is fully furnished including linens and kitchenware. Artists must provide their own groceries and may choose to bring personal amenities. During summer and fall the William Allen White Cabin is the home of Rocky Mountain National Park’s Artist-In-Residence.
Artists will present two 45-minute public programs during their residencies. This interaction can be tailored to an individual’s medium, interest, and experience using only a few hours of one’s stay. Programs can be demonstrations, talks, exploratory walks, or performances.
Be prepared to work in high desert, summer weather conditions that include high winds, low relative humidity and temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and lows reaching roughly 40 degrees at night. Deadline for 2013 is March 15, 2013.

The Artist-In-Residence

Programs can be demonstrations, talks, exploratory walks, or performances. In addition to the park, the nearby community college art department can be used as a public program venue. Entries are accepted for the 2013 Program with postmarks dated October 1 through November 15, 2012.

Caldera Writers and Artists in Residence, Oregon

Another Writers and Artists Residency to apply early next year. Mark your Calendar!

Every year we invite artists from all over the world to our Caldera Arts Center near Sisters, Oregon, for monthlong residences.  Artists are provided free, private A-frame cabins and share access to wet and dry studios, a darkroom, a kiln, editing facilities and rehearsal and performance space.  Because we believe a range of backgrounds enhances the communal experience, residencies are open to artists from any field, including WRITERS, as well as scientists and environmentalists.

Caldera’s Artists in Residence program offers the gift of time and space.  Residents are given a free cabin, 24-hour access to studios and the time and space to create.  No money changes hands.  Residents are responsible for food, travel, materials and other expenses.  By design, the residents form a small community of 5–12 artists, depending on the group.

A weekly meal is shared and collaboration is encouraged.Artists aren’t required to finish a project during their residency, but are encouraged to share their work with the nearby community.  Many artists give presentations in the neighboring town of Sisters, or area schools, or migrate toward Caldera’s youth program and help with kids’ art projects.

Residencies last one month, and take place in January, February and March. 2014 applications will open in early January 2013.

HISTORY OF ARTISTS IN NATIONAL PARKS

Artists were among the first to record the visual beauty and the drama of the American West on canvas and in photos. Carleton Watkins, Ansel Adams, Thomas Moran, William Henry Jackson, and others awakened a nation to the magnificent waterfalls, geyser basins, and wildlife found in what would become some of our nation’s most revered national parks.  They looked beyond nature as a raw resource; they spoke in defense of disappearing wildlife and vegetation. They saw beauty and virtue in places promised to the future.

The Joshua Tree National Park Artist-in-Residence Program offers visual, performing and literary artists a residency from two to six weeks long during the months of March, April, October, and November of each year.

The accommodations within the park are located at the Lost Horse Ranger Station, in a rustic and self-sufficient cabin with nearby panoramic views of the park. In exchange for the adventure of living and working in a national park, the resident artist will have the opportunity to create a body of work and to share it with the surrounding regional and Southern California communities.  Deadline for this year July 1.

Writer in Residence – Cascade Ntl. Park

The Artist-in-Residence will be a practicing artist with a portfolio of published, performed, or exhibited works. Applications are accepted from visual artists, writers, musicians, and other creative individuals.
Residencies can be from 3-6 weeks. Spring and fall options (usually from September 15 to the end of October). Artists only – sorry, no family or pets.

Amy Clampitt Fund
Applications are invited from poets or literary scholars of poetry with professional standing in their fields as well as emergingpoets/scholars are eligible for residencies. The level of accomplishment of the work submitted will be considered as it is commensurate with the applicant’s age and/or experience. The Amy Clampitt Fund Residency Program encourages individuals from all backgrounds to apply.
The Residency award consists of the use of the Amy Clampitt House in Lenox, MA free and clear for a six-month or twelve-month period beginning on February 1, 2013 and ending on January 19, 2014. Grants for travel to and from the Clampitt House are available in exceptional circumstances. A monthly stipend of $2,500 is paid to the resident fellow. It is expected that the resident fellow reside in the house full-time and focusing exclusively on his/her creative work.
Lenox is in rural Western Massachusetts, bordering Northern Connecticut and Eastern New York. As public transportation is virtually non-existent, it is necessary that residents make arrangements for their own transportation for the duration of the residency.  August 1, 2012: Deadline for submission of Applications for the 2013 Residency.

The MacDowell Colony provides time, space, and an inspiring environment to artists of  exceptional talent. A MacDowell Fellowship, or residency, consists of exclusive use of a studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals a day for up to eight weeks. There are no residency fees. MacDowell Fellows are selected by our admissions panels, which are comprised of a revolving group of distinguished professionals in each artistic discipline who serve anonymously for three years.
Eligibility: The Colony accepts applications from artists working in the following disciplines: architecture, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts. Writers Colony in Provincetown

The Norman Mailer Center, Cape Code, MA, has established a writers retreat program for emerging, mid-career and distinguished writers from November 1, 2011 through May 1, 2012.

The Colony will select writers on a rolling basis, based on merit. These writers can work as they wish independently of outside influences at the Mailer home with the support of the Colony’s winter staff.

 

ReadingRoom

Every other week there will be an evening at the Mailer home hosted by the Colony where the residents can socialize with other writers from the Fine Arts Work Center, local artists, and other writers who study or reside in the Provincetown area. Accommodations will be at the Mailer house.

The entire home, including shared kitchen privileges, will be available to three writers at a time. Each writer will have his/her own bedroom with private bath and/or shower on the second floor of the Mailer home.
