How Smart Writers Write to Market their Books

Social Media has become part of our culture, and it helps to connect with your readers. However when scrawling through tweets and other posts on Social Media sites one gets the impression that 90% of all posts by writers are “buy my book, buy my book, buy my book ….”  Few links are pointing to interesting, entertaining or helpful content – despite the fact that there are so many talented writers out there who could write great articles or show snippets of their books. This would make their Social Media presence more valuable and would connect readers with their writing craft.

Question: Whom Would you Believe More:

a) advertisements
b) newspaper / magazine articles
c) samples to try out a product

Most consumers / readers are not excited by pure advertising, they prefer authentic content and like to read writing samples.

Why are authors trying to market their books only with a) when b) and c) are more authentic in the eyes of consumers – or at least a mixture of a, b and c?  I am not telling you a secret here: b and c are free … and sometimes authors can even make money with writing newspaper and magazine articles.

It is Called CONTENT MARKETING
And it is nothing new, if you work in marketing. From Coca Cola to Volkswagen to IKEA, content marketing is getting more and more foot hold. Read an article “Why Content Marketing Works

All these companies have to employ and pay a lot of money to “story tellers”. However, you as an author, you have done the “content” part already in writing your book, you just need to use your content and “market” it, in order to give your readers samples of your writing or make them curious about your new book. Study after study have shown that this marketing method can be hugely effective for turning your audience into paying customers. When it’s done well, a content marketing strategy entertains your readers and shows them how good you are at writing.

Coca-Cola Journey, asks a series of questions about each story.  Here are three of them:

  1. Does it pass the water cooler test?
  2. Does it surprise you?
  3. Does it have universal appeal?

Learn from these Writers

Write Something of Value for Readers
– which is “by chance” part of your book, such as travel tips to the location of your books plot, museums, festivals or public transportation that are mentioned in your book. You have to do your research for your books anyway, why not use the material you gather and write several articles that you can offer – always mentioning your book. One more way of content writing: Try to write as many guest blogs as possible for top bloggers that are high on Google and Alexa rankings. It will give you and your books more exposure and new readers.

Why Asking for (media) Book Reviews?
When you could get both: book promotion and at the same time (often) being paid? I know, it is a new concept to many writers, but when you think about it – it makes really sense: why use your time and effort to chase reviewers, when you can use your energy to leverage your books content and your research content – to create articles that you can pitch to both, print and online newspapers and magazines?” Read the examples of two writers who have just done that.

Perfect for Shy Writers
Content book marketing is also perfect for shy writers who might cringe at stepping outside their comfort zone. They can promote their books at the end of each article they write and even add links to their website or book sales page. Use sentences from your articles to build interesting posts and tweets.
BTW: Traditional media is more and more outsourcing, barely any full-time writing staff is left, which means they are open to pitches from freelance contributors…

“The bottom line is that people trust editorial content more than they trust advertisements (only). Do the right mix. Whether your business is as big as Colgate or whether you are a one-person start up, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to utilize this simple fact in order to engage your audience and build your customer base.” And Joe Chernov brought it to the point: “Creating content that is so valuable that people would pay for it, yet you give it away for free, is a reliable way to earn the public’s trust.”

Do’s and Don’ts in Content Writing / Blogging

  • Headline attention – encourage readers to read the next line
  • Use keywords that resonate with your audience
  • Simple and direct works well
  • Exciting, interesting, controversial, sensational all work well
  • Numbers / lists / real data works well
  • Just don’t be boring
  • Don’t forget to install an opt-in email list to be able to contact your fans!

Writing content will not transform your book into an overnight success, but it is a wonderful option for a long-term strategy, to build an authors platform and it gives your readers a sample of your writing. Benefits of Content Marketing vs Asking for Media Reviews
Almost every author I meet, worries about getting reviews for their books, getting known by readers and selling more books. No wonder – with millions of books competing for exposure! Book reviewers, both in the media, especially magazines, newspapers, or radio and avid readers/reviewers and book bloggers, are overwhelmed with requests.

But why asking for (media) reviews, when you could get both: book promotion and at the same time (often) being paid? I know, it is a new concept to many writers, but when you think about it – it makes really sense: why use your time and effort to chase reviewers, when you can use your energy to leverage your books content and your research content – to create articles that you can pitch to both, print and online newspapers and magazines?

Make use of your assets!
The three main assets you have:

– your writing skills
– the content you already wrote
– the research you have done for your book(s)

Write about anything
In recent blogs I introduced two writers who (indirectly) promoted their books to a million readers, just by writing

– about restaurants that are mentioned in his book (Steven Raichlen) in Huffington Post
– about how much he hates self-promotion (Sean Beaudoin) in Salon.com

Let your imagination soar
I was just talking with a client, who wrote a romance novel, how much material she has to write about for blogs and newspaper/magazine articles. Not only her book, but using all the research she has done for it. Keywords for her book are: Skiing, mountain, outdoors, FBI agent, inheritance, stolen jewels, gemstones, Montana etc.
Other than surf- or football magazines, she can write for pretty much any newspaper or magazine in English language media. Note, that I did not say any US-media! English language media are covering not only America, but half of the world: Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Canada etc. as well as all English internet content providers.

Two more benefits of writing content:

  1. You have lots of material to write about.
    You can tweet it, post on Facebook, put in your timeline on Google+ and mention in your blog – which you have certainly connected to your Amazon author page and to your Goodreads page.
  2. You get valuable back-links to your website/blog.
    In practically all articles you write, there is the “bio” or “about the author” where you can mention your book or your website – together with a link or sometimes maybe two. Click the links above to the two author blogs by Steven Raichlen and Sean Beaudoin, who wrote for Huffington Post and in Salon.com.

Learn the techniques to write for newspapers / magazines
Write newspaper style: the inverted pyramid.  Write in an inverted-pyramid style, with the conclusion first, details later. GoodDocuments.com gives these tips: “Write with the “punch line” first, starting with the conclusion, rather than building up. One way to learn to write this way is to write the section first with all the details, and then go back and start it with a lead sentence or two.”

Writing Successfully for the Web
Online readers’ attention span is 10 seconds long, so writing for online publications is a bit

Content book marketing includes not only blogging or writing articles for newspapers and magazines, but also podcasting, email marketing, creating online courses and even book marketing through webinars.

How to Become a Successful Writer? WRITE !

Even the shyest author, who would never speak at writer conferences or to a group of book lovers at a library, can write his or her way to success. I am not talking about your next book, which is certainly important, as your readers want to get more books from you, once they discovered you as an author.

So, what else can you write to become successful?

  • write short stories that you can sell (or give away) on Amazon
  • write articles for newspapers and magazines
  • write regularly blog articles
  • write guest blog
    .

OMG, I hear you saying, the day has not enough hours… to do all this…
.
Write short stories
In a former blog post  I explained “why you should split your book apart and sell each piece separately” and “divide it in chapters which you can sell to magazines or to web publishers”. To use a chapter or two for a short story means no work at all, but you certainly could change or shorten it a bit. Offer these short stories for download on your website – this way you get the email of your readers. Install an opt-in email form and offer your readers at the same time to sign up in order to get regular info about free stories and new book releases.

Very important: Don’t just give the story away. Write a short bio or add an about.me link, including your website, info about all your books and their sales link at the end of your short story. This way, readers meet the author (you) and get to know your books and might one order right away with the help of the link they find in the short story.
Upload short stories to Wattpad, Red Room, Goodreads or Booksie.

Why short stories?  With all the distractions from other, flashier forms of entertainment it can be a struggle to set aside an hour or two and a find a quiet spot to read a book. Short stories can be read in 20 minutes- while enjoying lunch break, riding the bus or standing in a queue.

Markets for Short Stories:  Authors who are aiming to supplement their income have to find markets at magazines, on Duetrope.com or offer their books to Amazon for inclusion into “Kindle Shorts”. Stories between 2,000 and 5,000 words are most market-able, however there is demand for all lengths. Duetrope is an award-winning, free writers’ resource listing over 4150 current Fiction and Poetry publications, updated almost daily.

Write articles for newspapers and magazines
Be smart, and sell your magazine articles over and over again. As long as the markets don’t overlap, you can sell exactly the same article as many times as you like and, in this globally connected marketplace, it is easier than you think. However, you can only sell first rights, either print or electronic, once for the same piece. After that, unless you change the article significantly, you must offer it as a reprint for a lower fee.

If you change the article, you can sell it again for first rights. For example, you can turn a 600 word piece about traveling with a dog (a chapter of your memoir book) for a dog lovers magazine, into a similar length article for a regional newspaper and then a dog food website (e-rights). Then tweak it into an 900 word article for a national newspaper. Make make some minor changes and shorten the piece a bit for a travel or and airline magazine. Each time, you are able to sell it for first rights. Continue to sell it, however look also out for new markets in other English language media overseas.

In a salute to some of Steven Raichlen’s favorite local bars, restaurants, coffee shops, lobster shacks, and ice cream parlors on Martha’s Vineyard, he had his characters visit the same places which he usually patronizes with his wife. He writes in this article: “I hope you’ll discover them by reading “Island Apart”. And then he gives even a link to his book on Amazon, explaining that it is now available in paperback.

Writing this article, Steven Raichlen was able to mention his book to a million readership FOR FREE, as the famous Huffington Post is a blog-empire, newspaper and online news aggregator, is also ranked the most powerful blog in the world by “The Observer” and is number 42 in “The Guardian‘s” Top 100 Media List.

Why Blogging is #1 in Gaining Readers
“Blogging is not only fun and a way to interact with your readers, but it is an important part of your social media presence”, says Edmund S. Lee, a famous content marketing specialist: “Did you know that blogging is part of a complete social media strategy? The number one reason you need to include blogging as part of your marketing strategy is because it will gain you more readers and also more customers.”  He explains further: “There are a number of reasons why blogging brings an increase in website traffic and in customers. The first has to do with the art of search engine optimization, aka SEO, which means a higher ranking on Google”.

I might add: especially if you post your blog headlines regularly on Google+. And your blog gives your readers a reason to come back to your website on a regular basis. They will naturally see you as someone who provides value to their lives, which builds trust between you and your readers.

Write guest blogs
To get the most of your guest blogging, look for a blog with an audience that’s similar to yours, but preferably with a huge readership. This way you can greatly increase the number of your visitors. A smart move is also to look for book reviewer blogs, as they are mainly read by book lovers. At the same time you make friends with the reviewer and chances are very high to get your own book reviewed. Check out a former post about guest blogging etiquette.

It’s called content marketing …
Writing articles should become your standard operation procedure, no matter if blogs, articles for print or online – free or for a fee. Write and sell articles to newspapers, magazines and online. Reselling your work makes good business and time management sense, it cements your brand and gets your name and your books titles to a large audience. And even if you give away your articles (in exchange for email addresses of your readers) you gain something very important: Contact to your readers (and maybe reviewers) and future customers.

One of the most savvy and clever marketing stunts by an author, I have seen in a very long time: Steven Raichlen is a food writer, known for his books: The Barbecue Bible and How to Grill, just wrote an article for Huffington Post 10 Great Places to Eat in Martha’s Vineyard. You might ask: fine, but what’s the point? Read on:

He also wrote a love story, which takes place in Martha’s Vinyard, MA, where he summers. His book in a nutshell: A New York book editor recovering from breast cancer, her diffident daughter, a self help guru, and the real life iconoclastic psychotherapist, Wilhelm Reich. Ultimately, it’s a story about love, loss, redemption — and a lot of really good food, that is mixed in the story. German readers might remember the bestseller: Es muss nicht immer Kaviar sein, by Johannes Mario Simmel.

Steven Raichlen’s brilliant coup:
He wrote an article for Huffington Post Foodie Paradise: 10 Great Places to Eat in Martha’s Vineyard.  In a salute to some of Steven Raichlen’s favorite local restaurants, coffee shops, lobster shacks, and ice cream parlors on Martha’s Vineyard, he had his characters visit the same places which he usually patronizes with his wife.

He writes in this article: “I hope you’ll discover them by reading Island Apart. As my present to you and just in time for July 4th, here are 10 great places to eat in Martha’s Vineyard, who knows, maybe you’ll maybe run into Claire and the Hermit of Chappaquiddick …”  And then he gives even a link to his book on Amazon, explaining that it is now available in paperback.

Writing this article, Steven Raichlen was able to mention his book to a million readership FOR FREE, as the famous Huffington Post is a blog-empire, newspaper and online news aggregator, is also ranked the most powerful blog in the world by “The Observer” and is number 42 in “The Guardian‘s” Top 100 Media List. Their print version is available in eight major countries.

What can we learn from author Steven Raichlen?

  • Clever Marketing and reaching millions of people can be done totally free (other than your time). Just use your creativity and imagination!

  • Be self-assured and don’t hesitate to pitch international newspapers / blogs. It takes as much time as to pitch your local neighborhood paper.
    .
  • Write something of value for readers – which is “by chance” part of your book, such as travel tips to the location of your books plot, museums, festivals or public transportation that are mentioned in your book.
    .
  • You have to do your research anyway, why not use the material you gather and write several articles that you can offer – always mentioning your book.
    .
  • As a writer you know how to write, just learn how to write online content by reading lots of online articles and how they are set-up
    .
  • Have a stunning photo on your books cover!

The possibilities of marketing your books are endless:

  • A writer of romance, situated in a Western ambiance, could for sample write how to learn wrangling horses or write about guest ranches – and offer these articles to travel magazines or newspapers.
    .
  • A writer of historical novels could write many articles about fashion, way of life, recipes or interior decoration in the 19th century world.
    .
  • A writer of crime thrillers could elaborate in an article about weapons, psychological reasons behind crimes, or details about the police work.
    .
  • Writers of business thrillers could offer an article what hedge funds are, how banks and mortgage companies are working or portrait business tycoons.
    .
  • If any kind of animal is mentioned in your book – write about their habitat and their life cycle, you can even write about your own pet, if it is a character in your book.
    .

Got the idea??? You have thousands of nouns in your manuscript – which means you are able to write thousands of articles. As a writer you don’t lack fantasy, that’s for sure… Let this talent work for you!

The Secret of Success with Social Media

If you’re in the midst of developing one of the more than one million books that are published every year, it’s time to start thinking about how you are going to market your book … because in today’s publishing environment, it’s up to you to build momentum for your work.

However, if all you do on Twitter, Google+ or Facebook is to hawk your book or try to interest agents and editors in your manuscript you are probably not going to get anywhere.  This is not to say you can not ever talk about the interesting things you’re doing, this just can’t be all that you’re doing.

People on Social Media want content, and sharing content has become one important aspect of it. Create content that your target audience loves! The true allure of content marketing is in building an audience.

Social sharing provides signals to Google about which content is high quality; but more than that, social media provides networked, word-of-mouth publicity.

10 Commands of Social Networking

Twitter, Google+, Goodreads, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, blogs, websites…

  1. Social Media is instant communication.  Managing time for  requests, connections, and comments is important.
  2. Be upfront and honest.
  3. Don’t try to do everything at once. Take it one Social Network at a time.
  4. Treat connections with respect. Followers and friends are so important.
  5. You have a great reach across the internet? People want to connect with people.
  6. It’s not about the most connections when it comes to Social Networking, It’s about having relevant connections.
  7. Be comfortable in the network(s).  Be able to be your authentic self.
  8. Automate posts – in order to save time you can spend individually with your followers
  9. Ask questions and share, share, share. Everyone has questions, some have answers. Get a dialog going…. After all, Social Media is about sharing.
  10. Set-up your bio(s) for optimization. Use key words that will attract the type of people that you want to connect with.

Ask yourself “how am I truly adding value to my networks today?”  Start thinking about Social Media as a conversation not a transaction.  You will get really frustrated if you think it’s an immediate fix. Social media is important, maybe even crucial for writers today. Don’ t forget: customers always buy from those they know and like.

Just click on “Follow” in the upper line on each page – and then on “LIKE” next to it. There is also the “SHARE” button underneath each article where you can submit the article to Pinterest, Google+, Twitter, Chime.in, Facebook, Tumblr and StumpleUpon.

In one of my recent articles I have written about Content Marketing via your blog and how to write for the web. Another article encouraged writers to “Start a blog today!” as a New Years resolution.

Jeff Bullas has written a fantastic article (well, blog) about Content Marketing (for authors, I call it blogging) and the benefits (for the author). He says:

Search
“It is vital for optimizing your website and blogs to rank higher in search engines. The better the content and the more it is shared tells Google and other search engines that your website is worth reading. So it is pushed up the search rankings. If it is really good content it may even appear on the first page or even at number one (by the way by obtaining top ranking it receives about 40% of all clicks).”

“Important for driving social media sharing – the better the content the more it is shared. It is as simple as that. Crap content does not get shared. Fullstop!!”
