Autumn Leaves by Barbara Winkes

Rebecca Lowman, married for 16 years, is the mother of two girls, 8 and 14. She is content with her life in the small fictional town of Autumn Leaves.

Callie Bryan who inherited the house across the street from the Lowman family is a single lesbian, a writer who has her own reasons to seek out the peaceful country life: to finish her latest project and to escape a relationship that had turned abusive.

The close friendship that she and Rebecca form becomes continuously complicated when attraction comes into play. Rebecca is bewildered and scared by her feelings, questioning her faith and her life so far.

Callie has sworn to stay away from relationships that could hurt her, but she’s too much in love to care. Before they can come to terms with the changes, the secret comes out, not all of their friends reacting kindly.
.

The falling leaves and changing colors signify a gentle but irreversible change. As friendship turns into attraction, denial into awareness, both women deal with a growing pressure from their environment.
