Haig-Brown Writer in Residence, Vancouver Island

Published authors are being invited to apply for the 2013-2014 Haig-Brown House Writer in Residence position. The residency entails spending the winter months (or a portion thereof) living in the Haig-Brown Heritage House, which is under the management of the Museum at Campbell River.
For those who are not familiar with the West Coast: Winter on Vancouver Island is almost like Summer in San Francisco.
The very modest four bedroom house reflects the character of writer Roderick Haig-Brown and his wife Ann. Located in a peaceful setting on the banks of the Campbell River on Vancouver Island, it contains a Heritage library and is surrounded by two acres of garden and 17 acres of public parkland.
The writer’s time will be divided between pursuing personal writing projects and providing literary advice and support to the local community, with writing time favored on a 60/40 basis (as per Canada Council’s Author Residencies Program guidelines). The writer would also participate in Museum winter programming.

A stipend of up to $2000 per month, depending on available funding, will be provided.
Please include a resume (maximum two pages), a list of publications, a one-page proposal of anticipated community activities, and a sample of work in progress (20 pages); with reasons why the residency would further your work. Professional Canadian writers who have one published book and are established in any creative literary discipline(s) — fiction, non-fiction, poetry, playwriting, journalism — are all encouraged to apply.

The following is a list of the possible retreat times:

* October, November, December

The Writers’ Retreat Provides: The Writer’s Retreat offers writers time and a remote location to pursue their professional projects. The writer will be housed in the Berton House at no cost in rent or utilities. A monthly honorarium is provided to help cover food and other living expenses. Travel costs to and from Dawson will be covered!
The writer is responsible for a public reading in Whitehorse and Dawson City and a summary of their stay at Berton House, including any press clippings from local newspapers.

The writer is also encouraged to:
* interface with the public and the local literary community
* feature their work in local newspapers and on local radio stations
* avail themselves for interviews with local media
* hold writing workshops in the community and/or at the schools and colleges

Writers-in-Residency Colorado & Arizona

 You may have read recent blogs how to apply and where to find grants and free writers residencies, perhabs in Oregon, California or Washington State. Here are two more, both in National Parks, on in Colorado and one in Arizona.

Cabin @ Moraine Park

Rocky Mountain Ntl. Park, CO
The Artist-In-Residence Program at Rocky Mountain National Park offers professional WRITERS, composers, and visual and performing artists the opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the park’s inspiring landscape. Selected artists stay in a historic cabin for two-week periods from June through September.
During summer and fall the William Allen White Cabin is the home of Rocky Mountain National Park’s Artist-In-Residence.
The cabin above Moraine Park was the summer retreat of William Allen White from 1912 to 1943. A nationally recognized journalist and editor of the Emporia Gazette (Kansas), White’s spirit lives on with the contemporary artists who work in his cabin today.

The cabin has a high-beamed living/dining area with a large fireplace, one bedroom and bathroom, and a small kitchen. It is fully furnished including linens and kitchenware. Artists must provide their own groceries and may choose to bring personal amenities. During summer and fall the William Allen White Cabin is the home of Rocky Mountain National Park’s Artist-In-Residence.
Artists will present two 45-minute public programs during their residencies. This interaction can be tailored to an individual’s medium, interest, and experience using only a few hours of one’s stay. Programs can be demonstrations, talks, exploratory walks, or performances.
Be prepared to work in high desert, summer weather conditions that include high winds, low relative humidity and temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and lows reaching roughly 40 degrees at night. Deadline for 2013 is March 15, 2013.

The Artist-In-Residence
Program at the Petrified Forest offers professional WRITERS, composers, and visual and performing artists the opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the park’s inspiring landscape. Selected artists stay in a historic cabin for two-week periods from June through September.

This interaction can be tailored to an individual’s medium, interest, and experience using only a few hours during the residency period. Programs can be demonstrations, talks, exploratory walks, or performances. In addition to the park, the nearby community college art department can be used as a public program venue. Entries are accepted for the 2013 Program with postmarks dated October 1 through November 15, 2012.

Caldera Writers and Artists in Residence, Oregon

Another Writers and Artists Residency to apply early next year. Mark your Calendar!

Every year we invite artists from all over the world to our Caldera Arts Center near Sisters, Oregon, for monthlong residences.  Artists are provided free, private A-frame cabins and share access to wet and dry studios, a darkroom, a kiln, editing facilities and rehearsal and performance space.  Because we believe a range of backgrounds enhances the communal experience, residencies are open to artists from any field, including WRITERS, as well as scientists and environmentalists.

Caldera’s Artists in Residence program offers the gift of time and space.  Residents are given a free cabin, 24-hour access to studios and the time and space to create.  No money changes hands.  Residents are responsible for food, travel, materials and other expenses.  By design, the residents form a small community of 5–12 artists, depending on the group.

A weekly meal is shared and collaboration is encouraged.Artists aren’t required to finish a project during their residency, but are encouraged to share their work with the nearby community.  Many artists give presentations in the neighboring town of Sisters, or area schools, or migrate toward Caldera’s youth program and help with kids’ art projects.

Residencies last one month, and take place in January, February and March. 2014 applications will open in early January 2013.

HISTORY OF ARTISTS IN NATIONAL PARKS

Artists were among the first to record the visual beauty and the drama of the American West on canvas and in photos. Carleton Watkins, Ansel Adams, Thomas Moran, William Henry Jackson, and others awakened a nation to the magnificent waterfalls, geyser basins, and wildlife found in what would become some of our nation’s most revered national parks.  They looked beyond nature as a raw resource; they spoke in defense of disappearing wildlife and vegetation. They saw beauty and virtue in places promised to the future.

The Joshua Tree National Park Artist-in-Residence Program offers visual, performing and literary artists a residency from 2-6 weeks long during the months of March, April, October, and November of each year.

The accommodations within the park are located at the Lost Horse Ranger Station, in a rustic and self-sufficient cabin with nearby panoramic views of the park. In exchange for the adventure of living and working in a national park, the resident artist will have the opportunity to create a body of work and to share it with the surrounding regional and Southern California communities.  Deadline for this year July 1, 2012.

Writer in Residence – Cascade Ntl. Park

The Artist-in-Residence will be a practicing artist with a portfolio of published, performed, or exhibited works. Applications are accepted from visual artists, writers, musicians, and other creative individuals. Residencies can be from 3-6 weeks. Spring and fall options (usually from September 15 to the end of October). Artists only – sorry, no family or pets.

We provide a home in surroundings that will inspire you and space and opportunity for reflection. The artists selected present at least two programs while in residence. Workshops, talks, digital photography classes, plein air painting workshops, musical concerts or other educational presentations. Sent three samples of written work. Storytellers send 5-10 minutes of work on CD or DVD. Deadline for Fall residency is July 1, 2012.

Amy Clampitt Fund
Applications are invited from poets or literary scholars of poetry with professional standing in their fields as well as emergingpoets/scholars are eligible for residencies. The level of accomplishment of the work submitted will be considered as it is commensurate with the applicant’s age and/or experience. The Amy Clampitt Fund Residency Program encourages individuals from all backgrounds to apply.
The Residency award consists of the use of the Amy Clampitt House in Lenox, MA free and clear for a six-month or twelve-month period beginning on February 1, 2013 and ending on January 19, 2014. Grants for travel to and from the Clampitt House are available in exceptional circumstances. A monthly stipend of $2,500 is paid to the resident fellow. It is expected that the resident fellow reside in the house full-time and focusing exclusively on his/her creative work.
Lenox is in rural Western Massachusetts, bordering Northern Connecticut and Eastern New York. As public transportation is virtually non-existent, it is necessary that residents make arrangements for their own transportation for the duration of the residency.  August 1, 2012: Deadline for submission of Applications for the 2013 Residency.

Writers Colony in Provincetown

The Norman Mailer Center, Cape Code, MA, has established a writers retreat program for emerging, mid-career and distinguished writers from November 1, 2011 through May 1, 2012.

The Colony will select writers on a rolling basis, based on merit. These writers can work as they wish independently of outside influences at the Mailer home with the support of the Colony’s winter staff.

 

ReadingRoom

Every other week there will be an evening at the Mailer home hosted by the Colony where the residents can socialize with other writers from the Fine Arts Work Center, local artists, and other writers who study or reside in the Provincetown area. Accommodations will be at the Mailer house.

The entire home, including shared kitchen privileges, will be available to three writers at a time. Each writer will have his/her own bedroom with private bath and/or shower on the second floor of the Mailer home.
