How to Feed Your Tweets

What, when and where to tweet


Are you sometimes scrambling what to tweet?  An important point with Twitter is to choose your passion, the topic you want to talk about and also to have your own brand, something people know you for.  

You certainly can send the occasional tweet about something completely different, but for the most part stick to your important topics.

Content to Tweet About:

  • Re-tweet news in your field on the Internet (Internet & news papers/magazines)
  • Articles from your website, or your own blog posts & guest posts
  • Set up Google alerts (http://google.com/alerts) for news content

How Often Send Out Tweets?
Unless you have ten-thousands of followers, the chances that many people will see all your tweets and click on links are very small.  The number of followers and the tweeting frequency should match.  As no one is 24/7 on Twitter, you might have to send your posts two or three times a day, maybe in the morning, around noon time and early evening.  As more followers you have and the more you want to build a brand, or announce events, the more you should tweet.

Automate  and Save Time
First of all:  Create a file (Notepad or Word document) and create a long list of tweets, using your own blog, guest blog, news etc. from which you copy/paste tweets, using headlines and URL’s.  Second:  create a folder where you place all your images you might use on Twitter or Google+, some you used on your blog, but also new ones. See our blog about free images you can get on the Internet.  Automate your tweets so that you don’t have to sit in front of the computer all day long. There are several tools you can use: We are scheduling on Hootsuite and also on Futuretweets, other providers are Twitterfeed, and Twaitter (now Gemln). They are slightly different and they serve different purposes.

Twitterfeed 
Twitterfeed.com feeds your blog to Twitter, Facebook etc.  A YouTube video shows you step by step how to start Twitter feeds, however there are approx. twenty more videos to watch on YouTube.

Twaitter / Gremln
Twaitter.com – now Gremln is a free product that allows you to schedule your own tweets (up to 20 an hour) on a single or recurring basis. The process is very easy.  You will also find Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn integration, detailed analytics, customizable dashboards, stunning reports, multi-user management, and a whole lot more.

Link Your Blog to Twitterfeed or Twaitter (Gremln)
Every time your blog – or website for that matter – has something new it will be sent to Twitter. The other two options, Twaitter and TwitterAdder are where you should put all your best blog posts. When you’ve built up thirty or fifty blog posts, you will have a handful of favorites that you would like to recommend others to read.  Post the links in Twaitter or Twitterfeed and schedule them.

Important:

  • Re-tweets other content – a lot!
  • Decide what your brand is on social media sites
  • Set up automated tweets based on your sources
  • Post often on Google+ and connect it with Twitter (automatically transfers to Twitter)
  • Write a blog and feed the posts automatically to Twitter, FB, LinkedIn etc.

Monitor Your Traffic
With the increased flow of tweets you will get more replies from people. Be prepared to answer them!  You’re also going to have to carefully monitor the traffic that’s coming to your blog and from which Social Media site or organic search it is coming.. This is a great way to understand which of your tweets are working and which are not.

Using the analytics on your blog, you can see how many hits you are getting:  When do you get peak traffic?
Re-arrange your tweets a little bit and don’t forget to use hashtags with relevant keywords. Try new things. A few video blogs from YouTube, or a series of special blog posts that you can link to.  Over time, you can get others to discover you and getting them to re-tweet your posts.

Never Too Early
Building your brand on Twitter – or any other social media site – doesn’t work overnight. It takes time and as earlier you start as better for you as an author. You will want to have a big following long BEFORE your book is finished (maybe even before you start writing) in order to have a great start when launching your work.

Hidden Gems: Google+ Hashtags

If you are a long-time reader of this blog you might have realized that I am a big fan of Google+ – or GooglePlus – however you want to write it.  And I am not the only fan of this Social Media site, more than a billion other people signed up and it won’t take long until Facebook is a thing of the past.  At least for professionals who realized how important their Google Search Engine ranking is.  Now let’s look at one of the most interesting features Google+ has to offer:

#Hashtags
Do you know of any Social Media site that creates custom #hashtags for you? Well, Google+ does!
And they do even more: when starting to type a #hashtag, Google kicks in and offers in a drop-down menue with suggested hashtags starting with the letters you have typed so far. Isn’t that fantastic?
And the best is: these #hashtags offered by Google+ are significant to their search engine ranking.  If you add your own hashtags to a post, Google+ will display up to three of them in the upper right corner of your Google+ post.  Initially, one is visible, but hovering your mouse over that one will show readers the other two #hashtags.  Google+ users create in fact a #hashtag database and help establish what tags will be related. In a way it is up to Google+ users what’s relevant on Google’s search engine ranking.

Forgot to Place #Hashtags?
No problem: If your post has a large amount of text, Google+ will often find main keywords within your text and convert them into #hashtags, which are visible at the upper right of your post, just as your own #hashtags would be.

Google’s Search Algorithm
It determined in the past which pages should rank the highest, but now with implementing these #hashtags, Google added a “self-learning” aspect into its algorithm. 5 Google+ Tips for Advanced Users

Before I even joined Twitter, GooglePlus (Google+) was my first Social Media Network of choice. I loved the beautiful images and videos that appeared on my timeline. And I steel a couple of minutes every day to scroll down and share, or at least place a “plus sign”, on interesting posts.  Google+ has now the title of being the world’s second largest social network. It’s a non-brainer to use the many benefits for authors and publishers. And don’t forget the thousands of Google+ communities where you can place your post directly to your favorite audience. Here are five tips how to improve your success with GooglePlus.

1. Curate Good Content – Share it!
Most users do not create enough of their own content to be active daily on Google+. By sharing other people’s content, you can effectively engage and inspire your followers. Google’s +1 button is used 5 million times a day, according to stats from Huffington Post. Sharing other posts and writing a short comment, will also show up on Google’s Search Engine, and consequently improving your Search Engine Ranking (SEO).

2. Have Lots of Images – Less Links
Google+ is a visual social network. Posts with with a message and an uploaded image or video will get much higher engagement than shared links.

3. Tag Other People’s Posts or Share Them
By adding a “+” symbol in front of page names, your exposure on Google Search engines increases as well as this with readers, bloggers, reviewers and your supporters. You will find a strong increase of new followers over time too.  Do check regularly your Google+ notifications, found at this little bell symbol on top of your Google+ page.

4. Regularly Check Your Google+ Statistics at “Page Insights”.
Want to know when your page was visited most, from which country your visitors came from, or their gender and age? Google+ Insights will help you to find out what kind of content your followers engage with most, as well as their demographics. Insights offers you statistical information about how your target customers are engaging with your business on Google. In order to access this information, your business must have a verified local page. In an article, Search Engine Journal lists these useful features:

  • New followers on your Google+ page
  • +1 clicks on your posts, the number of re-shares your posts got from your Google+ page
  • The number of comments your post received from your Google + page
  • The number of times people clicked on Maps to get more info about your business location
  • The number of clicks received to get info on driving directions
  • The number of clicks to your website through local search results

5. Connect Your YouTube With Your Google+ Page
Currently in Beta, YouTube just announced the ability to merge your YouTube channel with your Google+ page. How it works is in detail, even with screenshots, described in an article from NPtechforgood.com:

Step 1: Click on your profile photo, go to your YouTube Settings > Advanced.
Step 2: Select “Connect with a Google+ page”.
Step 3: Select your Google+ page.
Step 4: Confirm that you want to merge your channel and your Google+ page.
Step 5: Note the new YouTube tab on your Google+ page.
Step 6: Select “Use YouTube as ….
Step 7: Note the integration of of your Google+ page inside your YouTube channel.

Google+ Benefits
According to the Digital Buzz and Huffington Post statistics, more than 625,000 People join Google+ EVERY DAY. There were over 500 million users on Google Plus in 2013 and the numbers are growing strong. Social Media and SEO: Did You Know?

It’s not enough anymore to have a popular website with good content. If you want better search engine results for your business, it’s time to look at how social media influences those results, before hitting publish on your blog.  Make sure that you have optimized your post for search engines so you will be building your SEO. Make a list of key words and phrases that customers will be using to find you.  Then create content that includes them in the headline, content and meta description. 

Andy Crestodina explains:  Social appeals to PEOPLE. Search engine optimization appeals to ROBOTS.  Social Media and Search Engine Optimization have the same purpose: a meaningful CONNECTION with an audience.

The Secret to Find Readers: Wattpad

In a former blog post we wrote about Brittany Geragotelis’ six-figure-deal offer from Simon&Schuster, which she received after being “discovered” on Wattpad by millions of their readers, who downloaded chapter after chapter of Life’s a Bitch.  Canadian-based Wattpad.com, founded in 2007, was initially providing a mobile platform for public domain works from Project Gutenberg.  Within two years, the Wattpad app had been downloaded 5 million times. Writers post work in chapters, which tend to be short, to make them suitable mobile.

Wikipedia explains: As of April 2014:

  • 85 percent of its traffic and usage comes from mobile devices
  • 3 million stories total, with 250,000 new stories added every month
  • 1.3 Million registered users
  • Over 16,9 Million unique visitors per month
  • Users spend an average of an hour a day on Wattpad

The most frequently voted stories (every day) appear on the “What’s Hot List”. These stats change daily, due to reads and votes by other users. According to the profiles visible on the site, many of
these authors are young adults.

Featured Story List and Contests
Wattpad also has a Featured Story list, which promotes content reviewed and approved by staff and an editorial review board. Many of these featured stories are written by self-published and
professional writers from different genres.
Wattpad holds several smaller contests a year and one major one. The large annual contest is called “The Watty Awards”. Contests are open to anyone who has a Wattpad account.

During the summer of 2012, Wattpad in collaboration with Margaret Atwood, Canadian poet/novelist/literary critic, held the “Attys”; the first major poetry contest offering a chance to poets on Wattpad to compete against each other in one of two categories, either as an “Enthusiast” or a “Competitor”.

What is the Real Benefit?
With 16.9 million unique global visitors per month and an average of 30 minutes spent reading per visit, it’s easy to understand why it’s getting a lot of attention.  Authors can upload either the completed or working version of their books for readers to read. It is not possible to upload a book as one single file, it has to be done on a chapter-by-chapter basis.
Wattpad is entirely free for all of its users which means that authors are actually giving their work away for free – no sales on the Wattpad site! However if your readers ask you, send them a list with links to all your sales pages.

Wattpad is a Social Media Site
Bronwyn Hemus gives this advice: “You have a captive audience. People who sign up to Wattpad are clearly interested in books, there are millions of engaged readers looking for their next great read. The golden rule applies:  Always actively engage with people who are reading your chapters. If someone has left a comment, make sure that you respond to their comment as soon as you can. Take the time to look at your reader’s profile so that you can engage with them on a personal level. Wattpad readers certainly seem very willing to engage with an author and provide feedback as a startling 5 million new comments are posted every month.  If you want to breed reader loyalty, spending a bit of time getting to know your audience will go  a long way to increasing sales. It will also help you better understand your readership which in turn will help you focus your marketing efforts outside of the site.”

Serialization Keeps Readers Interested
Her second great advice:  “You have to release your content on a chapter-by-chapter basis which in turn encourages continuous engagement with readers. Loyal readers can register themselves as a “fan” and as such, will receive email alerts whenever their favorite author posts something new.  Consistency is crucial to the success of serialization so it is best not to join Wattpad if you don’t have
a completed book (even if only in the first draft) to share.

Readers like knowing that once they’ve invested in a book, they will be able to read the story to the end. And: Chapters that are posted on a Friday afternoon and a Saturday morning have the most visibility.
Dianne Greenlay wrote in Selfpublishing Advice:
Although Wattpad has a high proportion of YA users, it includes readers and writers of every age and genre, including the much-acclaimed Margaret Atwood. Several writers on Wattpad have caught the eye of literary agents and received offers based on the number of “reads” that their writing has accumulated.
