5 Tips for Publishing on LinkedIn

A great possibility to find new readers:  Blogging on LinkedIn.

1. Use this new, free feature to get more exposure for your writing and your books.  

This is how it works:  If you go to your LinkedIn homepage you will need to look for an “share an update” box in the upper part of your page and look for a pencil symbol next to the paper clip. If this is visible, you are ready to publish on Linkedin! Hover over the symbol and it will show “create a post“. If you click it, you will be taken to a page ready to put your title in, write a new post or paste an article from your blog, website or a previously created content.
It means you can start publishing articles, images and links to potentially 300 million users on LinkedIn.

#Hashtag or Not?

Did you know: One single hashtag can increase engagement by 100%!  Wikipedia explains what a hashtag is: A word or an un-spaced phrase prefixed with the number sign “#”. It is a form of metadata tag. Words in messages on micro-blogging and social networking services may be tagged by putting “#” before them.  When you click on a hashtag, you’ll see a feed of what other people and pages are saying about an event or topic.

Hashtags have pretty much taken over social media by storm. Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Pinterest and Tumblr, all are using hashtags to organize content. However, using it improperly isn’t going to help you at all. It is not a tool to attract attention to your content.  How to use hashtags in Social Media marketing:

Organize and Find Content Easier
Don’t use it for simple and frequently used words!  And not for every word in your tweet!  Just because you can use more than one hashtag in a message doesn’t necessarily mean that you should. Readers would see an abundance of hashtags as spam. While they can be an incredibly effective marketing tool, you may do yourself a disservice if you use them too frequently.
The true power of hash-tagging is the ability to connect your tweets and posts with various popular and incredibly visible topics, which will drive new viewers to your social media presence, as well as to give you the opportunity to engage with them. When well-crafted andused sparingly, hashtags can help increase your visibility. The more comfortable your followers feel with your brand, the more likely they will be tempted to interact with you via Social Media.

Don’t Over-Use
For example: You don’t need to use a hashtag in every Google+ post. It’s particularly important to remember that you should not use them while responding to someone. Whether it’s a re-tweet or a reply, avoid adding these characters in when they are not needed. Using hashtags sparingly – not more than 1 or 2 per post – and wisely has shown to be an effective means of marketing your book. Send your message with the power of the hashtag!

17 Social Media Mistakes to Avoid on Twitter

Want to become successful on Twitter and network with as many followers as possible? Here are are some basic principles to keep in mind when you tweet 140 characters to millions of people. Keep in mind that not only your followers, but also their followers can read it. Make your Twitter profile an irresistible force to your ideal audience. Who I would NOT follow:
.

1. “Contributed” Twitter Accounts
Twitter accounts that are not run by the owner, but by his/her “team” – who sprinkle annoying advertisements between the tweets they schedule: “Contributed Tweets for @xxxxxx are delivered by @….Team https://……co&#8221; I don’t want to deal with a “team”, rather with real people.

2. Missing or No Bio Information
Why should I follow someone who doesn’t even show anything to entice me following him/her? Twitter gives you 160 characters to fill in your profile. Use them. Make sure it yr;;d something about you
and/or your (writing) business, so people can decide whether or not they want to follow you. If you want  to stay anonymous, don’t use Social Media!

3. No Avatar – Instead an Image of Your Pet
Who wants to talk with an egg, or a cat, child or your dog? OK, if you have a company, you can use the company logo, but for everyone else: get a great studio photo once in ten years and use it for all your marketing needs including your book cover or on your website. Would you send a potential employer a photo of your house pet, your book or a toddler’s image? No? Why then show these annoying images to your potential customers? Be professional! Sometimes I am inclined to publish a book with the worst avatars!

4. “Private” Accounts
If you set your Twitter account to “private” status, prospective followers won’t be able to see your tweets. Why would anyone follow you if they cannot see what you Tweet about? I often get followers, and when attempting to follow back, I am stopped by their “lock”.

5. No profile image
No matter how camera-shy you may be, don’t fail to upload a headshot or company logo. When people see the default Twitter image in your profile, they tend to assume a) that you don’t know what you’re
doing on Twitter yet; b) that you don’t care; or c) that you’re not a ‘real’ person but a spammer/robot. Say cheese!

6. Never, Ever, Use TrueTwit Validation Service!
Some are nice Welcome messages, but 90 per cent are spam. But I read them in the past, first I answered, telling them that I DO NOT use TrueTwit Validation Service, but then I gave up and just
ignored the sender.The irony is, that these people are often following me, and then when I want to follow them back, their message appears! Why did they choose to follow me and then want ME to validate??? You just lost a reader, a customer, a potential fan, a potential reviewer.

7. Not Following Back
Some Tweeps hardly ever bother to follow (legitimate) followers back. They seem to be proud to have more followers or want to show how “popular” they are – even buying twitter followers… I un-follow people if they haven’t followed me back after a couple of months. Others will un-follow you if you don’t follow back within the week – which is unfair, as someone could be in vacation, or ill, or just overwhelmed with work for a couple of days. But if I see 5000 people following you, and you are only following 300 of them, it shows me right away you are not very engaging.

8. Greeting New followers with FB likes / Book Promotions
You get a message in your mailbox: Someone mentioned you. Curious you check it, but no, you are only summoned to go to their Facebook account and LIKE their page. Or they send you the link to their
books sales page. And that’s the greeting for following them… Do they sign up with Twitter only to advertise their wares? Same: Sending DM’s with advertisements. You open the Direct message and
you are greeted with advertising. My reaction: immediately UNFOLLOWING. Thanks and nice to meet you…

9. Never Interacting With Others
If you post only about yourself and never take time to say ‘hi’ or ‘thank-you’ to people, or you never re-tweet or reply to people’s comments, your followers will get upset and are likely to un-follow you. If prospective followers see no engagement, they might not bother to follow you in the first place.  In the process of choosing followers, one can sometimes scroll down their timeline for a whole week
and don’t find a single re-tweet. Or the opposite: you want to re-tweet and cannot find anything the person ever tweeted … only re-tweets of others’ content.

10. Talk Only to Their Friends
When someone only uses Twitter to chat-surf, others might not wish to follow you, when you are constantly chatting with your friends. Being social is great, but this is too much! Why should I re-tweet what you are talking with your friends? Not interesting for others.

11. Having No Bio or Real Name
Your name and @name, should be searchable on Twitter. It means people can type you into Twitter’s search engine and find you. Use your own name or try to get the actual name of your small publishing
business on Twitter. Keep it as short as possible, to give tweeps more space to re-tweet your content or to communicate with you.

12. Not Tweeting Regularly
There are several programs that can analyse which of your followers are totally inactive. JustUnfollow or Tweet Adder for example can identify them. I stop following people if I don’t see any action on their account for 2 months. If you want to keep your followers, be sure to stay active on Twitter. Avoid to barely ever re-tweeting others, or answering them. Twitter is a SOCIAL network, don’t use it as a advertisement board only. Answer or re-tweet others – and they will return the favor.

13. Tweeting the Same Message Over and Over
Tweeting the same content over and over is a recipe to get un-followed. Why would I follow you if there is never anything new? Same with re-tweeting only other peoples content. If you want to grow your following, show others who YOU are and create your own presence. Stop your continuing posts, varying from three to six subjects, and this for pages and pages… What I found so far: 80% of these are male and/or are introvert writers or “leadership business advisers”.

14. Broken Links
Click before you tweet – there is nothing that frustrates more than a link to a post or resource that does not work. If the link is broken, no one can re-tweet your message.

15. Every Tweet is a Sales Tweet
If you do nothing but tweet “Get my book on Amazon” or “Like me on Facebook”, you are considered a spammer, only trying to sell to followers. Talking about your book (only): Buy my book, buy my book, buy my book, buy my book – pretty boring, isn’t it? Aim to send out entertaining, thoughtful, funny content or news, that are interesting for your fellow tweeps. You could for example improve these points:

16. Not Having at Least 2,000 Followers – or Stuck With 2,000
Some books and blog articles advice to never follow anyone with less than 2,000 followers. Doesn’t sound fair, as everyone has to start somewhere. On the other hand some tweeps click on every name they see on Twitter to reach 2,000 followers very fast – and then stuck. For them, instead to un-follow successive those who do not follow, they just wait it out to get 2,000 people who follow them, in order to continue their growth.
But this can take forever, as no one wants to to follow THEM – and then wait for months or even longer, until they reciprocate – or worse: never do. Un-follow people who haven’t followed you back after a while. This is especially important to avoid “follow limits”. If you have anything like these numbers – you are in trouble: 268 TWEETS – 2000 FOLLOWING – 345 FOLLOWERS

17. Too Few or Too Much Content
When people on Twitter are following close to 2000 people and they’ve only Tweeted a few times (or sometimes not at all). Without content, those you have followed are unlikely to follow you back. On the other hand, I see people with maybe a few hundred followers, and they are tweeting tens of thousands of times.

These are just a few of many issues that make it difficult to interact for others on Twitter – or prevents tweeps to click on follow you – and also for you to build social networksand your writer’s platform. To become successful and popular on Twitter do this:

  • Pick the right time of day
  • Leave room for a re-tweet
  • Tweet the latest news in your field
  • Write a tempting tweet headline
  • Choose a short Twitter name
  • Don’t make the tweets only about you
  • Avoid not being social – or being too social

Follow others, tweet something valuable for others and don’t use Twitter only as a cheap way to advertise!  Create a nice mixture of your own, really interesting tweets and do some re-tweeting. If you want to become popular on Twitter and have your tweets go viral, learn how to use Twitter in a smart and social way, and nurse your relationships – that’s what Twitter is there for. Twitter is a tool that creates relationships and conversation – using it only for “advertising” would be devaluing the system

Pay With a Tweet – And How it Works

A great way to introduce your upcoming book to readers is to write a prequel in form of a short free book, including links to your book sales page or your website. But how to let as many readers as possible know about your free one – and at the same time about your new upcoming book?  Use the help of Social Media and let your free book or other written content go viral via Twitter by re-tweeting to your customers friends and followers. Nowadays it’s sometimes more valuable to have people talking about your book than the money you would earn for it.

Sell Your Free Book for the Price of a Tweet
It’s a service that lets visitors access to your content without having to “pay” for it by giving up any personal information on a form — all they have to do is share it with their own networks orTwitter, LinkedIn or Facebook. Three steps is all it takes to get your book noticed!

  • Step 1: create a button and embed it on your website, e-mail or wherever.
  • Step 2: users access your content and ‘post’ about it.
  • Step 3: your users’ shares are re-tweeted and re-posted by their friends and followers.

Easy to Set Up and Use
Not only is the tool super easy for your landing page visitors to use, but it’s also quite easy to set up. Pay With A Tweet http://www.paywithatweet.com allows you to stash content (a song or an e-book) and only allows access to it after a user has tweeted something about it. In other words, it’s like a paywall in which you pay by tweeting about something. If it’s true that attention is a scarce resource, drawing attention to something ought to be worth something, right?

The “social payment system” was developed by Christian Behrendt and Leif Abraham, who tested it on their own book, Oh My God What Happened and What Should We Do? After eight weeks, their book had been downloaded 113,000 times and they’d sold 1,300 copies on Amazon. It became a Twitter trending topic twice, and the only promotion they did for the book was Tweet a single time,

Teaser Version for Your Book
Why not give away a teaser version of your ebook in exchange for some promotion? Authors and book sellers can post the exact message they want consumers to send, in exchange for the free book. Retailers can attach a URL to the Twitter message that directs consumers to the web page that has the “Pay with a Tweet” button.
If you use a WordPress.org theme for your website you can install their own plug-in: https://wordpress.org/plugins/pay-with-a-tweet/. While consumers can add short personal notes to the author’s message, consumers cannot edit the URL attached to the tweet. Recent Developments on Facebook that Affect Writers
1) It’s Harder to Get Your Posts Under the Noses of Your Readers

“Most of your friends, fans, and readers see your Facebook posts in their Newsfeeds. Facebook has been restricting what appears in Newsfeeds (censoring?).  Posts from pages, such as your Author or your Book pages, may not show up at all!!!”

In one of his earlier posts he explains the difference between a personal Facebook page and a Fan Page (or author page) in detail:  “A Fan Page is supposed to offer several advantages over the standard personal Profile page, including:

  • Size: A Personal Page is limited to 5,000 Friends, while a Fan Page doesn’t have this limit.
  • Analytics: A Fan Page offers basic tools for analyzing your audience. If for example an agent or a publisher asks about my audience, I could quote these stats and appear knowledgeable.
    .

Limitations of Fan Pages
“You can’t reach all your Fans.  Facebook only allows you to reach a small portion of your hard-earned Fans — unless you pay.  Although I now have more than 2,000 Fans, Facebook will only allow me to reach about 200 of them with my posts — unless I pay $20.”

Use Google+ to post your content, no limitations there, and you can connect directly with Twitter, so every post from Google+ shows automatically up on Twitter, which saves you lots of time and your content will you get a fantastic ranking in Google’s Search Engines – and more exposure for all of your books.

Social Media: Is it a Total Waste of Time?

It’s always surprising: when searching on Google for a certain word or topic, I often find our own articles and blog posts, as well as re-posted content from our Google+ sites on Google’s first page. This very high ranking on Google’s Search Engine means that users find easily our content. And if YOU, as an author, write a lot of posts, blog articles etc. – always with a link to your website or Amazon author page – you will be high in Google ranking too and more people will learn about your books.

Total Waste of Time
Authors flock to Social Media sites to get the word out about their books. However, many writers see it as a waste of time and would rather write on their next book. Smart authors combine the best of the two worlds and post small snippets of their writing or interesting details of their research on Google+ posts. Think about it: if you combine your Google+ page with your Twitter presence, explained here in detail, you post only once on Google+ and it appears on Twitter as well. You save 50% of your time on Social Media!

Your Goal for Being Online:
Unless you have ten-thousands of dollars every month to spend on advertising for your book, you might use the more subtle way of book marketing and meet your readers online on Social Media sites. But what would your (potential) readers be interested in or want to hear from you? They certainly want to learn more about you as a writer and they want to learn about your books and get samples of your writing. It means you can do what you like most: WRITING and at the same time give your potential readers and buyers of your book reasons to follow you and tell others, or re-post and re-tweet your content.

Use Your Creativity
Authors often ask: “what should I post on Google+ or on Social Media sites in general?” Nothing easier than that. You can use every word, every fact, every location or scene in your book to write a short post, blog or even a long article. Even novels, such as a Science Fiction story has lots of potential to be used to write short articles. Just one example: I recently thumbed through a clients’ book and found on the first page, under acknowledgements, that she thanked the police chief of her town for giving her a tour and explaining her certain laws when she did the research for her book. Her meeting with the police chief and each one of the laws she learned about, could be the topic of a short article or blog!

For Authors: It’s a Must to Be on Google+
Google has been using Google+ to discover new content, and many authors have discovered that URLs (links to their sites or articles), but also posts that they commented and shared on Google+ are indexed very quickly – and they find themselves often on page 1 on Google’s search results – one of the main reason to be on Google+ or to post on Google+ communities.
Compare this to Facebook, where privacy settings and restrictions on data sharing, make it rather often impossible for posts to never be crawled or indexed by Google at all. Unlike Facebook, which hides data from Google, or Twitter – which directs Google not to follow most of its links – Google+ data will be immediately and fully accessible on the Internet and readers can find you and your books easily. Each post on Google+ acts like a mini blog post and adds highly share-able, link-able context to the search engines. Last but not least: Don’t miss to link to all relevant profiles from your Google+ “About” page.

To sum it up:  Use your research and your manuscript to write lots of blog posts, articles and Social Media content and post it first on your Google+ page.  Combine your Social Media sites, linking to each of them.  Post with one click on several of your Social Media sites, which can be done by using scheduling sites, such as Hootsuite.com or Shortening Sites, such as Bit.ly. This is just for posting your articles – not for directly connecting with your followers or readers. The time you save when linking your Social Media sites is not only time you save to write, but also some time you can spend to connect directly with your readers!  Social Media = Social Networking.
