Are You Blogging or Writing an Online Diary?

Readers are always curious to find out more about an author, or to see more of her or his writing.  What would a book lover expect when visiting their favored writers pages? An author bio, background stories to the book(s), maybe something about the writing and publishing process, news about upcoming books and a sneak peek (maybe even a chapter) into the next one, even a prequel or a link to a prequel. Visit blogs or website logs from famous writers and you see often great blog examples

Blog or Diary?
A diary “offers the potential to reveal a fully fledged identity, one with hopes, doubts, petty occupations and grand aspirations.  In contrast to a diary, the blog is conscious of its readers from the outset: testimonies, commentaries, journalism … are components of a blog. Blog posts are an important part of an author’s platform, it will improve your Google ranking, they are material to tweet and post about and are the gateway to more readers and customers.

Professional Writing
Keep in mind that not only your readers find your blog posts, but also literary agents and publishers, as well as potential business partners. Being in a profession (of writing) requires a business-like blog, not a diary where you talk about your feelings and your daily occurrences.  Readers want to read about your book or writing, not who came on Sunday for dinner, your shopping experiences at a mall or your menopause.

Blog Post Like A Professional
In a great article, Reginal Chan gives valuable advises, read the whole post to learn more:

  • Before you start drafting your blog, you need to have a great plan in mind:
  • Why you are writing this blog?
  • Knowing the reasons why readers are coming to your blog
  • How you can attract potential readers to your blog
  • What can you do to ensure they stay longer on your blog
  • How to market your writings and further increase the blog traffic

And Don’t Forget:

  • Preparing a killer title and excerpt
  • Content is King!
  • Use videos, images, slides etc. – just everything visual
  • Quote people
  • State resources
  • Call to action

Stephen King advised in an interview: 
“Jot down a list of blog topics you could write about. Circle the ones at least 80% of your readers would find irresistible. Write about those topics and nothing else. Simple, but it takes discipline. The better you become at cultivating that discipline, the more popular your writing will become. If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.”

Of course, most bloggers do neither. We start a blog, squeeze in the occasional post, between going to the gym and picking up take-out, and then expect it to somehow lead to fame and fortune.
Sorry, but that’s not how it works. Every popular blogger I know reads at least one book every week and writes at least 1,000 words every day. Yes, it’s a lot, but success comes at a price, folks. Are you willing to pay it?

How Your Blog Helps Your Books Taking Off

A blog is one of the most valuable tools to show you and your work to readers. Your blog is part of your platform and your author brand. Your blog has endless benefits, such as higher “Search Engine Ranking” on Google, better visibility, and to separate you from mainstream writers. Blog reader surveys found that blogs are building trust, and are influencing buying decisions. Let’s have a look at the benefits of your blog and best practices:

Write Regularly
Static websites don’t attract many new clients or customers. However, a regularly updated blog can
produce a constant stream of new readers from all around the world. Blogs have so much
influence on purchase decisions. When readers sign up they expect to be able to read new
content from you at least once or (even better) twice a week.

What Shall I Blog You Ask?
Start with what you have already written: tiny snippets of your book, added by research findings you
found before writing. For example: you wrote a scene in your novel. Explain your readers more
about the place, the time, weather, landscape or history that are involved in the story. You can even
write about restaurants that the protagonist used to patronize:  FREE, Brilliant Book Marketing
You can also re-write or spin a short chapter of your book or elaborate on the people you thanked
in your acknowledgements.

Prequels
Use your blog to write about your next book, write one or several prequels.
A prequel can be one story or a dozen. However, it should be an irresistible preview of the book itself,
short, but with a revealing scene from the draft manuscript of the novel, and a great teaser for the
upcoming work. The author’s goal should be: to make the reader want more… It is never too early
to write a prequel. You might write it even before starting to write your book, and your blog is a great
place to do just that. However, keep it to 1,500 words max. and don’t reveal too much. It should be
only a teaser for your next book.

the rest of the article. There are certainly more social media sites (Google+ can be conected with

Learn to Write for the Web
Web visitors are not reading, they are scanning text. Learn how to write for the web: lots of bullets,

of each chapter. Readers spend more time on pages with valuable information, structured and
easy to read content – and lots of links.

Tips for e-Zine Submissions
If you’re submitting to e-Zines for the first time, read carefully through the following tips:

  • When using an online submission form, read the directions carefully before you fill out the form so you know what files and information they want.
  • Don’t rely on fancy layout or unnatural words to tell your story if it’s headed for a podcast. Indents, italics, and symbols will not translate easily into the audio medium.
  • Many online forms have anti-virus security programs that won’t allow certain file types. Don’t hit the “send” button too soon or accidentally cancel when working in an online form.
  • Pay close attention to the e-Zine’s intended audience.
  • Put links on your own webpage to every story you publish in an e-Zine. This is a great way to share your work with your fans without having to self-publish the story on your own site.

Important: Learn to Write for the Web 
Writing for blogs is totally differently from writing a novel. Learn how to write the “inverted pyramide” from most important on top to less further on. Is your text easy to read? Eye-tracking studies have shown that readers SCAN text (in an F-shaped pattern), rather than to READ it. And: website visitors read more slowly on the screen than in print. So, how to you use this knowledge for your writing?

Use bullet lists, such as this one:

  • Create lots of short paragraphs, and give them all a headline
  • Keep sentences short, they should never be longer than one line
  • Use spell check and a beta reader / software
  • Readers like to interact on the Web, so give them lots of links
  • Illustrate your text, use lots of images
  • Don’t let your readers scroll on the screen, keep it to one page
  • Except prepositions and the words “and” and “the”, all major words in a headline should be capitalized

Online content is not just about words. When you write for the Internet think “presentation”. Print content is formally written and a passively read. Online content is informally written, interactive and dynamic.

Most e-Zines are free. Many e-Zine publishers will permit a copy writer to submit a small article on topics that pertain to the publisher’s e-Zine. The writer gives the publisher permission to publish their article, free of charge, in exchange for the publisher including the author’s bylines. Normally, this small 3-line blurb directs traffic to the writer’s website, which in turn, creates more business for the writer.

Celebration – and Thanks to All 500,000 Readers

Today is the big day for this blog: The 500,000 reader mark is reached.  What a number!  500,000

Thank you for signing up, thank you for commenting on the blog and through Social Media, and thank you to the guest bloggers on this site!

I couldn’t have imagined this in 2011, when SavvyBookWriters started very slowly.  Sometimes, there where only five or ten blog readers a day, no wonder, as I had no social media presence whatsoever.  And I must admit that English is not my mother language and I often struggle with my writing. But writing every day improved it – I hope.

Two things helped, and they will help you as an author of books as well:

  1. Persistence – don’t give up, even if you have a very slow start
  2. Get enough audience, join Google+, Twitter, FB, Goodreads …
    .

My goal for future blogs is to bring you fresh and valuable information. Blogger versus WordPress Blogs – Pro and Con’s

Many traditional websites only have 5-6 pages, so the maximum number of times they will ever get indexed by search engines is 5 or 6 times, if they are static pages and not constantly updated.
However,
when you create a blog, every single post you publish has its own URL. Suddenly you can go from 5-6 pages to 20, 50, 100 or over 1,000 at http://SavvyBookWriters.wordpress.com.

If you would like to use a free blog, you have the choice of WordPress or Blogger. Both of them are great blogging systems, but you might be wondering which one to choose. Both WordPress.com and Blogger are great free sites, but which is the right one for you?

BLOGGER (Blogspot.com)
Blogger is a Google service, and just like YouTube, requires a Google account. It is very easy to use and maintain. With Blogger you get only Google+, Tweet and Like buttons on each post. There is luckily one workaround through the use of the excellent IFTTT web service.  Embedding a video from YouTube is free. A domain name with blogger account is always like “yourblogname.blogspot.com” by default (depending upon your country ‘.com’ will be changed). Blogger let’s you choose your own domain name for $10 per year and to connect your blogger account with your personalized domain name.

Blogger is the platform to choose if you are looking for a free product that might allow you to make a bit of money. WordPress is there for those who are in love with its huge variety of themes and the user-friendly approach. You can choose to enable Google AdSense on your blog which will show targeted adverts based on your content. You need to get some content up first, before choosing the option from the earnings menu entry.  Blogger sites are hosted on Google’s servers so you’ll rarely experience down times and your site should run smoothly most of the time. Unless your Google account password is stolen, it’s virtually hacker-proof. At the bottom of every post Blogger embeds a row of social networking icons, including Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Gmail and other Blogger blogs. Google’s AdSense Integration is easy with blogger because both are owned by the same company. Those who want to start blogging to earn some money they can opt for blogger as it gives you by default the option of AdSense to start with. Or you can choose Amazon affiliate for example, program blogger itself allows to generate affiliate revenue.

WORDPRESS.com
WordPress is greatly customizable, earning much of its good name for the huge number of themes and plugins available in the standalone open-source release. It allows you to connect to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Tumblr, StumbleUpon, Pinterest and Reddit for automatic sharing.

On their Stats site you can see how many visitors and views your blog received,

  • from which country they came,
  • your top posts and pages,
  • who or what referred to your blog’s site.
  • You will receive information how many total followers
  • how many shares your site receives,
  • what are the most popular tags (keywords)
  • who commented the most on your WordPress blog

WordPress offers only 3 GB of space and if your blog is the success that you hope it will be, 3 GB will eventually fill up – after 3000 blogs maybe, depending on how large your images are.
However, there is another solution available that gives you the possibility to have your own custom URL, but with all the benefits and statistics of a WordPress.com website: “Upgrade” for ca. $25 and buy your own URL (without the WordPress in it), sign up with a hosting company for approx. $6 / month.  This way you get all the useful statistics and features from WordPress without having to use their name in your URL.  Your blog will appear more professional to visitors!

WORDPRESS.org
Don’t be confused with WordPress.org and WordPress.com.
WordPress.org is absolutely free. All you need is hosting plan from a hosting company and a domain name that you purchase. And also a knowledgeable person to customize your site for your needs… WordPress.org is made for those who like to have total control over their websites. It is open source and therefor offers you fully customization. Both are owned by same owner but WordPress.com is something like blogger – it offers you free hosting and a free domain name that contains “wordpress” in it: yourwebsitename.wordpress.com.  While using WordPress.org you are the sole owner of the website, and you can choose if you use a free or paid theme (design) for you blog.

But why is blogging important for writers? Blogging is telling a story, blogging is sharing your opinion, blogging is reporting news and more. But at the core, blogging is writing! It’s an internet stage upon which you hope readers will drop in to see what you have to say – and get an impression of your writing skills.

My Own Mistakes … on Blogs

“Do Not Make Silly Spelling Mistakes” writes a blogger at Honkiad.com. She might have written it for me? Her article and also the following info graphic show how easily one can slip into it. And no, currently not writing in the mother language is not an excuse : )
She advises to be sensitive to spelling mistakes, such as there and their, it’s and its, form and from. The occasional slip is not going to lose you a lot of readers, but making the same mistakes repeatedly is going to annoy people.

  6. Work and Rework You Headlines – a good headline can be the difference between a blog post being read, or ignored.

Social Media: Is it a Total Waste of Time?

It’s always surprising: when searching on Google for a certain word or topic, I often find our own articles and blog posts, as well as re-posted content from our Google+ sites on Google’s first page. This very high ranking on Google’s Search Engine means that users find easily our content. And if YOU, as an author, write a lot of posts, blog articles etc. – always with a link to your website or Amazon author page – you will be high in Google ranking too and more people will learn about your books.

Total Waste of Time
Authors flock to Social Media sites to get the word out about their books. However, many writers see it as a waste of time and would rather write on their next book. Your Goal for Being Online:
Unless you have ten-thousands of dollars every month to spend on advertising for your book, you might use the more subtle way of book marketing and meet your readers online on Social Media sites. But what would your (potential) readers be interested in or want to hear from you? They certainly want to learn more about you as a writer and they want to learn about your books and get samples of your writing. It means you can do what you like most: WRITING and at the same time give your potential readers and buyers of your book reasons to follow you and tell others, or re-post and re-tweet your content.

Use Your Creativity
Authors often ask: “what should I post on Google+ or on Social Media sites in general?” Nothing easier than that. You can use every word, every fact, every location or scene in your book to write a short post, blog or even a long article. Even novels, such as a Science Fiction story has lots of potential to be used to write short articles. Just one example: I recently thumbed through a clients’ book and found on the first page, under acknowledgements, that she thanked the police chief of her town for giving her a tour and explaining her certain laws when she did the research for her book. Her meeting with the police chief and each one of the laws she learned about, could be the topic of a short article or blog!

For Authors: It’s a Must to Be on Google+
Google has been using Google+ to discover new content, and many authors have discovered that URLs (links to their sites or articles), but also posts that they commented and shared on Google+ are indexed very quickly – and they find themselves often on page 1 on Google’s search results – one of the main reason to be on Google+ or to post on Google+ communities.
Compare this to Facebook, where privacy settings and restrictions on data sharing, make it rather often impossible for posts to never be crawled or indexed by Google at all. Unlike Facebook, which hides data from Google, or Twitter – which directs Google not to follow most of its links – Google+ data will be immediately and fully accessible on the Internet and readers can find you and your books easily. Each post on Google+ acts like a mini blog post and adds highly share-able, link-able context to the search engines. Last but not least: Don’t miss to link to all relevant profiles from your Google+ “About” page.

To sum it up:  Use your research and your manuscript to write lots of blog posts, articles and Social Media content and post it first on your Google+ page.  Combine your Social Media sites, linking to each of them.  Post with one click on several of your Social Media sites, which can be done by using scheduling sites, such as Hootsuite.com or Shortening Sites, such as Bit.ly. This is just for posting your articles – not for directly connecting with your followers or readers. The time you save when linking your Social Media sites is not only time you save to write, but also some time you can spend to connect directly with your readers!  Social Media = Social Networking.

Hi everyone : ) For the past 32 months I have written more than 1,060 blog posts for SavvyBookWriters.com/blog – which have been read by more than 450.000 individuals at
SavvyBookWriters. These posts are submitted several times to Google+, Twitter, Pinterest,
Facebook, Tumblr, StumpleUpon, dozens of Google+ Communities, Goodreads etc.
However, this blog would benefit from a variety of voices, additional advice and different points of view. I am now inviting guest posts on this blog.

Guest Posting
It is a great way for your blog and your books sales page to get some fantastic exposure. You certainly can add links from your guest blog via the re-blog function to your website, your own blog or the online retailer where your book is sold.  At the same time you will be helping readers of this blog by providing them with useful and relevant information.  I welcome posts from writers or bloggers and others in the publishing industry, who know from their own experience what they are writing about.

Here are Some Guidelines for You:

  • Topics should be related to writing, publishing and book marketing. It doesn’t have to be specific to e-books. Write about victories and … in your writing career, or great tips you can give other writers or small publishers.
  • Your Guest Post must be original. It should be a new, original post, written entirely by you – No articles from article directories.
  • Length: Your guest blog should be somewhere between 500 words to 700 words.
    Longer posts if your  subject requires it.
  • Exclusivity will be for 30 Days. By submitting a guest post to us, you agree not to post it anywhere else online for a period of 30 days after it first appears on this blog- re-blogging on your page is fine.
  • Use examples and anecdotes to clarify your points
  • Offer fresh content that has not been published before
  • Send us a pitch only if you are a blogger with your own blog
  • Ensure that your post does not violate any copyright laws
  • Have a conclusion at the end of your article
  • Have a call to action for readers after the conclusion

Important: Learn to Write for the Web & Social Media
Writing for blogs is totally differently from writing a novel. Learn how to write the “inverted pyramide” from most important on top to less further on. Is your text easy to read? Eye-tracking studies have shown that readers SCAN text (in an F-shaped pattern), rather than to READ it. And: website visitors read more slowly on the screen than in print. So, how to you use this knowledge for your writing?

Use bullet lists, such as this one:

  • Create lots of short paragraphs, and give them all a headline
  • Keep sentences short, they should never be longer than one line
  • Use spell check and a beta reader / software
  • Readers like to interact on the Web, so give them lots of links
  • Illustrate your text, use lots of images
  • Don’t let your readers scroll on the screen, keep it to one page
  • Except prepositions and the words “and” and “the”, all major words in a headline should be capitalized

Online content is not just about words. When you write for the Internet, think “presentation”. Print content is formally written and a passively read. Online content is informally written, interactive and dynamic.

# 1 The Secret to Writing Great Headlines
Studies have shown that you can increase your conversion rate on a blog article, tweet or link by 73% if you use a great headline. People read blog posts because the title catches their attention. Create headlines that will captivate readers. Posts don’t go viral, but headlines do. It’s the headline that people share on Social Media.

  • Use Promises
    Readers will click on headlines that promise a reward, such as a solution to their problem or a sure path way to success. The most popular headlines are starting with numbers, such as “How to” or “Tips for”. You have seen lots of titles like: “99 Top Websites to Show Your Book“……… “77 Reasons Why Your Book Was Rejected” ….. or “The Benefit on Using Google+” ……
  • Use Celebrity Names
    All the top tweets feature celebrities, such as Obama or Oprah. For example: “Oprah uses this visualization technique. Should you?”

    Your headline should promise something new. “How a New App is Changing the Way we Edit Books.” or “5 Social Media Trends You Need to Know.”
  • Use Best and Worst
    Jeff Bullas, writing at the same topic, not only suggests to use new, celebrity, promises or numbers, but also best and worst: “Top 10 Google+ Posts or 2013.” or “Biggest Social Media Mistakes of 2013.”

# 2 Quote an Expert – or Several
If you read the most popular blogs on the Internet, you will notice that they have quite a few outbound links. People take you seriously when they know your information comes from an insider or a specialist in a certain field.
Theoretically, one can compile blog posts together on subjects she or he knows absolutely nothing about. As long as one knows how to quote and cite the right people, one will be taken seriously. Gather expert knowledge. This is how journalists make money with their articles (after thoroughly researching the topics).

# 3 Tell Stories or Write About Your Learning Experiences
Point to your own mistakes / experiences or to stories of companies or individuals that had done what you recommended, and how it worked for them. Readers like to listen to real stories. Which are much more likely to go viral than just blank information.

If you change only one thing about your blog content, this one should be it: Sprinkle a few stories and examples into your blog posts to justify what you are saying.
.

Last but not least: don’t get discouraged. Many bloggers write a couple of posts, don’t see much traffic, and give up. Building a readership takes time and experience. Get the word out about your book! Here are some of the promotional tools available on Goodreads:

Author Profile, Author Dashboard, and Widgets
All members of Goodreads have regular reader profiles where they can review books, add friends, and post information about themselves. When an author signs up for Goodreads, he or she begins with this basic user profile.

For any book listed in the Goodreads catalog, you can click on the author’s name to find the author profile. This page lists all of the author’s published work, whether he or she is a member of Goodreads or not. When an author joins the Author Program his or her user profile will be merged with the author profile. Becoming a Goodreads Author carries special privileges, such as the ability to

  • edit profile information,
  • add book cover images,
  • write a blog,
  • list quotes that you like
  • upload your videos,
  • promote events, book launches, book signings,
  • and start featured author groups.
After you have signed up for the Author Program, your log-in process does not change: You will still use the same username and password, but now your user profile will point to your author profile. You will also have access to a special Author Dashboard that contains useful links and statistics about your books.

How to Get More Readers to Your Blog

Subtitle: How to get more exposure for your articles, blogs, books …  as these tips are universal for all your writing.  Lots of visitors / readers are crucial for your success in building a following. Writing an article is just the beginning of content marketing.  If you want to reach a wide audience you have to place your work in front of many readers.

There are several steps in promoting your writing, no matter if you are a freelance writer for magazines and newspapers or a blogger who writes for an audience of potential readers:

  1. Set up plug-ins to your website or blog in order to have your articles automatically pinged to Social Media sites, as soon as you hit the “publish button”.
  2. Join as many blog directories and sharing sites as possible (see link addresses)
  3. Set up at least two Google+ sites and join Google+ communities in your field
  4. Claim your authorship on Google’s Search Engine
  5. Offer your article to newspapers and magazines, starting with local papers
  6. Split your article in sentences, add the link to your site and post it on Social Media sites
  7. Convert your article in a short slide show and post it for free
  8. Write guest blogs and/or comment on other blogs
  9. Consider to re-write your article and post it on high-traffic e-zines
    .

Document sharing sites
Scribd, a social publishing site, where millions of people share original writings and documents. Convert your original article to a PDF file and upload it to Scribd. Unlike article directories Scribd allows you to incorporate links within your content. You can upload anything onto Scribd as a way to grow your audience, just like on your personal blogs. Choose copyright settings, among many other options, making your documents most searchable. Authors are uploading e-books for sale on Scribd, and keep 80% of the profits. What’s intriguing the most about Scribd, though, is the idea of 50 million readers. Your blog certainly isn’t reaching that many people.

Video article
Convert your article to video by making a series of slides from your content. Import the slides into Windows Movie Maker then add music. Submit your video article to YouTube and other video sharing websites. Make sure you always include your full website address in the description meta-tag and also include it in the last slide to direct visitors back to your website.

Blogger (Blogspot)
Is a public blogging platform owned by Google and therefore is rapidly indexed by the search engines. Open another blog here and post parts of your articles.  If you already use Gmail you can simply add Blogger to your account. Every time you create new content add it to this blogging platform. Be sure to include links within the content and in your resource box that link back to your main website. This will boost the rankings of the original article you added to your blog or website.

Social Media Sites
On Google+ you can easily post your article, if it is under 500 words. There are for sure more possibilities on social media sites and on most you can add images and certainly link back to your website or blog. Read also this article about Social SEO Strategies for Start-Ups.

Google Authorship
Jeff Bullas explains: “What is eye opening is when I research things in the digital industry I am presented with a Google SERP (search engine result page) in which only a handful of results have a Google+ cover photo next to it!
